Turkish Residence Permit: Frequently Asked Questions

Getting your residence permit can seem like a massive undertaking, especially if you’re unclear of certain steps along the way or have your own unique circumstances. You should first check out our Residence Permit Guide which walks you through all the necessary steps in the application process. We’ve assembled this Turkish residence permit FAQ to supplement our guide and hopefully answer some additional questions you might have.

Note: All the information present is subject to change (and it often does). There are frequently variations between regions, branches and even the individual assigned to your application. If in doubt about your situation, contact the official helpline at 157, a legal representative or your consulate. 1. Who should apply for a residence permit?
The most common tourist visa type lets you stay in Turkey for 90 days. If you plan to stay in Turkey longer than this, you’ll want to be sure you’ve applied for your residence permit before the final day of your visa. If you fail to apply before the conclusion of your visa, you will almost certainly face a fine and possible ban on your next exit from the country.

2. Where can I apply for my residence permit?
https://e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr/

3. What are the various types of residence permit application options?
The four most common are:

  • Short-term residency – New applicants can expect up to a one year permit, while renewals can often be extended to cover anywhere from a few months to two years. In general, as of 2023, residence permits are being issued for six months.
  • Long-term residency – For those who have managed to maintain eight years of continuous residence permit coverage. These are valid indefinitely.
  • Family Residency – For those who are married to a Turkish citizen; minors dependent on a Turkish citizen, or foreigners here with over a year of continued residency that which to convert to family residence type.
  • Student Residency – For those pursuing associate’s, bachelor’s or graduate degrees in Turkey.

4. Am I applying for a first time application or an extension (renewal)?
If it’s your first time applying for a residency permit, then of course you’ll be applying as such.

Extensions are only for those who are holding a valid residence permit at the time of applying for renewal, and can be done within 60 days of the expiration (but not after). Both permit application types require physical appointments at an immigration office.

5. What documentation do suggest we have for a first-time residence permit application?
The official site outlines the necessary documentation here. The basics for a regular short term residence permit are:

  • A completed residence permit application form, printed in color
  • Your passport – We suggest taking multiple color copies, including of your entry stamp page, along with you. If your passport is in non-Latin letters, get a notarized translation.
  • A color copy of your health insurance policy. Most reputable insurance companies now issues policies which include a digital stamp/signature, so these can commonly be done remotely. This is not necessary for applicants under 18 or over 65.
  • Four biometric passport photos – These are required to have been taken within the last six months, against a white background. (You will need a high res .jpg for your online application that should match these photos you’re submitting.)
  • Proof of financial capacity – Your statement of available funds within the application may sometimes be enough, but sometimes you will be requested to return another day with a bank statement. To avoid the repeat trip, we suggest bringing a bank statement from your bank showing that you have at least 1.5 times the minimum wage for each month you are requesting. They can often be particular about which bank statement type they’re willing to accept, so for foreign banks you can have it apostilled, and then translated & notarized to cover all your bases.
  • Proof of residency – The most successful method is to sign an official housing contract with your landlord from an emlak, notarize it with them, and then bring it to your appointment. (Alternatively you could file for a taahhütname, but in our experience, these are less likely to lead to approvals.)
    • Strongly suggest getting a copy of earthquake insurance, the title deed (tapu), and ‘numarataj’ from your landlord at the start (making it known before you sign the contract), as they are all supplementary paperwork that can be requested.
    • If filing for a renewal (rather than a first-time residence permit), you will need to be registered at your local nufüs, and thus having the address formally show up in the e-devlet system. As of 2023, address change/registration is generally done through the Göç Idaresi for foreigners (who may sometimes then direct you to your local nufüs). You will need the document that appears in the e-devlet system under your name and address corresponding to your application.
  • Proof of payment for residence permit application fees – You can pay these online after logging in to see your application, in which case print a copy of your confirmation. You can also pay them at your local tax office. Some banks are able to process these, but in our experience, they often turn people away.
  • When applying for a touristic residence permit, we advise including supplementary paperwork for future travel reservations (flights, accommodation, etc.) within Turkey.
  • There is a pink/purpleish folder generally sold near every immigration office (sometimes people sell them right outside). We suggest grabbing one of these when you arrive for your appointment and putting all your documents neatly in them.

The following are sometimes, but much less commonly requested. You can typically attend your appointment without these.

  • Turkish police record – This is another unlisted requirement that is sometimes requested. You’ll need to venture to a proper courthouse (Çağlayan in Istanbul) and request your sabıka kaydı. Be sure to have it stamped and signed.
  • Proof you haven’t received social aid – Rarely requested but easy enough to procure. Head to your district’s Sosyal Yardımlaşma ve Dayanışma Vakfı, along with your passport and tax number.
  • Criminal Background Check* – First time applicants(*), unless in Turkey for longer than five years, need to generate a background check from their country of citizenship within the last six months. (If in Turkey longer than five years, you can produce the Turkish police record mentioned below.)

6. What should I know about registering for health insurance?
The major things to note when getting health insurance are:

  • SGK and private insurance are the available options.
  • Your residence permit will only extend to the day BEFORE the expiration of your insurance coverage. If your insurance coverage ends on 09/09/2099, then your residence permit will only be issued to last until 08/09/2099.
  • Most insurance policies can now be issued remotely as long as there is a digital signature and QR code.

Yabangee has partnered with a local insurance agency to process you as quickly, easily and affordably as possible. To get the best rate possible, apply here.  You can usually get it within a few minutes on any business day after payment. Learn more and fill out the form here.

faq1 7. How long after my application is approved can I expect to receive my card?
This tends to depend on luck. If fortunate, you’ll have it in a week or so. The official stated maximum wait is 90 days.

8. Can I leave Turkey in the time between having attended the appointment and waiting for my residence permit card to arrive via mail?
If your visa has expired and you are not a valid residence permit, then you must wait for approval or rejection of your residence permit application before leaving Turkey without penalty. In emergency circumstances, after you receive a positive evaluation of your application, you can request to leave for a short period. We suggest calling 157 and following their instruction for these situations.

In the event of a rejection, you will be directed to pick up your rejection paperwork and with that paperwork, you can leave Turkey within 10 days without penalty.

9. Can I leave Turkey if my appointment is scheduled, but my visa is expired?
No. If you try to leave before getting the official documentation after your appointment, you will likely face a fine and potentially a ban depending on length of overstay.

10. How do I make sure I haven’t overstayed my tourist visa?
The ONLY reliable way is to keep up with the 90 days yourself. If entering and exiting frequently, you can ask when entering Turkey at passport control, but we’ve been told that people have been misinformed. Always be sure to keep track and include your entry and exit dates when tallying. There are many online tools like this one that can be helpful.

11. How long after the expiration of my residence permit am I permitted to leave the country without penalty?
The official count is 10 days, but not every passport control agent is aware of this and they will sometimes refer you to a different desk. Factor in a bit of extra airport time for these types of issues. We’d suggest not risking the overstay at all, as some passport control officers seem to be unaware of the rule entirely.

12. My residence/work/etc. permit is about to expire, can I exit and return on a tourist visa?
Technically yes, but consider this decision carefully if you are hoping to apply again for a residence permit. Renewals are currently receiving much higher approval rates than first-time applications, so we recommend trying to renew rather than resetting and applying for a first-time application. However, if for any circumstances, this isn’t possible, then you can return on a regular tourist visa.

13. Where can I apply for a tourist visa?
https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/

14. Am I allowed to stay in Turkey after the expiration of my tourist visa if I’ve scheduled a residence permit appointment?
Yes, as long as the appointment was scheduled before you used up the 90 eligible days on your visa, you should be fine. Keep your appointment paperwork handy just in case.

15. What should I do if my residence permit is lost or stolen?
You need to report this to the police immediately and get an official report. You can then go to your local migration office (without an appointment), show them the report and pay the necessary fees.

16. What should I do if my passport is lost, stolen, renewed, etc. and I’m on a valid residence permit?
Go to your local migration office with your new passport, color photocopies and a corresponding biometric passport photo and inform them as soon as possible (we’ve heard between two weeks and twenty days as the limit). You won’t need an appointment, just wait to be seen.

17. What should I do if I have a change of address while on a valid residence permit?
You’ll have to head to your your local Göç Idaresi and take copies of all the relevant paperwork (usually a notarized rental contract, utility bill, earthquake insurance, passport, and copy of your residence permit). You may want to bring any supplemental housing paperwork you have (tapu, numarataj, etc.) just in case.

18. If I need to have money in a Turkish bank account for proof of financial capacity, how can I open one?
We have a guide on the process here.

19. What are the fees for the residence permit application?
The current card fee as of early 2023 is 356 TL. Taxes vary slightly according to various circumstances, but are typically around 1,500 TL for a one year application.

20. How can I pay for the residence permit application fees?
Thankfully, it’s now possible to pay online. You’ll see the option at the end screen of the online application process. Unfortunately, only Turkish credit cards are currently accepted. Alternatively you can pay through the Interaktif Vergi Dairesi.

If online isn’t viable, it’s extremely easy to do at a local tax office. Just be sure to take valid forms of ID (passport/residence permit) and the application form.

21. How long can I stay outside the country on a residence permit?
It would appear that under new guidelines, there is no limit to time spent abroad for a short-term residence permit. It should be noted that when applying for a long-term permit, they often consider how long you’ve spent outside the country in making their decision.

22. I heard I can do *insert illegal method* to make the process easier?
Those who have been dealing with this process for many years might tell you that they know of a “workaround” that includes fake documents, a professional who will provide notarized documents for a fee, etc. We strongly advise against this. The application process has become dramatically more organized over the past years and they’ve recently announced that they’re specifically targeting individuals who engage in these activities. The likelihood of being found out and penalized is high.

23. I am applying for a student visa. What should I do?
These are best done in collaboration with the institution that has invited you to study. The more established universities will likely take care of all the steps. Newer institutions might struggle a bit, so it’s worthwhile to keep up with the process as they go along.

24. If I’m told at my appointment that I need to retrieve additional documentation, how long do I have?
Officially, it is 30 days, but we strongly suggest doing it as soon as possible. It’s also worth trying to get documentation (or at least the name of your assigned officer) in regards to returning later.

Note: It would appear that for renewals, they are stating as little as 10 days permitted to get the necessary documents together.

25. Is it possible to choose the date of my residence permit appointment?
No. The site will assign you a date.

26. Should I carry my residence permit with me during my day-to-day?
YesYou are expected to carry this with you at all times. You should however, photograph or photocopy both sides of your card and keep them someplace safe.

27. What should I do in the case of having a baby born in Turkey?
If the baby is born with a parent who is a Turkish citizen, they are entitled to citizenship in Turkey.

If the baby is born to two non-Turkish citizens, the baby’s birth certificate will permit them to stay in Turkey for up to six months (or less, corresponding to the remaining time on a parent’s residence permit). If planning to stay in Turkey longer than six months, a residence permit application should be filed on the baby’s behalf.

28. Is there a service I can use that will sort my residence permit for me?
Yes! We offer that very service under Settle Turkey. Reach out to us via help@yabangee.com or visit our relocation services website for more details.

29. If my residence permit application is rejected for some reason, is there anything I can do?

  1. Thank you so much for this resource. I would add to the checklist something that should have been obvious but nonetheless I didn’t think of it.

Bring a printout of your current e-visa and any old residence or work permits.

Also, a general tip: make a copy of EVERYTHING before handing it over. They will keep most of these, so if there’s any useful records, it’s worth saving yourself future errand-running to make duplicates–or, for things like biometric photos or criminal record reports, get an extra copy at the source.

    • Hi, I am in moscow right now, I’m planning to go to turkey this end of this month, but my visa here in moscow is only 3 months, but I have resedence permit in turkey will expired on November, do I entry to turkey with my resedence permit? Even my visa here is only 3months thank you

      • As far as we understand, your Turkish residence permit expires in November, so you should be fine to enter with it. Your tourist visa in Moscow shouldn’t have any effect. You can always call 157 for more info as well. All the best!

    • Hi good day i would likr to ask what shall i do because i have a problem some of information of my application or randevo i found out is wrong like my passport # and my mother name..thank you in advance

    • Hi Nancy,

Not 100% sure, so definitely worth doing a bit of extra research (we’d suggest contacting the school you’re considering). As far as we know, they would need a residence permit as well as a report from their previous school at the minimum.

If you do find out any additional information, we’d love it if you shared with us. Best of luck.

  2. how long does it take to process residence permit in Turkey? and when i’m i expected to get the said processed Residence permit after the process?

  3. Thanks for all the info. I have a short term residence permit in Turkey and my permit is expiring on Sept 2017. I’m currently out of Turkey and will be returning after 2 months. I’m planning to renew my passport before going back to Turkey, since it’s expiring next year (2018). Will the immigration allow me to enter Turkey with the new passport using the still valid residence card of my old passport? Upon entry should I get an appointment to report the renewed passport or should I just do it at the same time with the residence permit extension application which can be applied online?

    • Hi Rowena,

This is a complicated one, because as far as we know, you’re able to go to the office where you had your ikamet appointment and provide both passports and they can adjust it to the new one in the system. However, we’re not exactly sure what happens when you’re out of the country and receiving the new passport and then trying to get back in. Have you tried calling their official help line (157) and asking? If they can’t help you, let us know and we’ll try to do a bit more research. Good luck!

  4. Is there any possibility for my documents to be signed and stamped before the date of my appointment so I can go out of Turkey for 5 days because of emergency reasons?

    • As far as we know, the official answer would be no. We’ve heard of cases where people go early and try to explain the urgency of their situation, but it really ends up depending on the sympathies of who you’re speaking with. You could always try 157 and see if there an alternative idea out there that we have yet to be updated about. Best of luck!

  5. How long can I stay outside the country on a residence permit?
Today I renewed my short term residency and the officer said I can be only 15 days outside the Turkey and this is the new procedure and order!!!
    Is this true?

    • Last we heard, the 15 day period applies to when you’re waiting for your updated residency permit to arrive. You can always call 157 and confirm any issues you’re having.

  6. Hı i stayed in turkey 8 months without eesident permit

  10. I am comming turkey in tourist visa. upon arrival can I apply for resident permit and work visa? And also can I go to european country from turkey……PLEASE ANSWER ME

  11. Hi,

my situation is a bit complicated: I have been in Turkey for two years on a student application which will end on Oct 26th. I married a Turkish citizen this year, so now I want to change my ikamet to a 3 year family residence permit (aile ikameti). However, my German passport will expire in Jan 2018, which means I can’t apply at this point (as far as I understood my passport needs to be valid for the period of the ikamet I want to get + 60 days extra).

I will be in Germany in the first half of Oct and get my new passport. I return to Turkey on Oct 14th for a few days and then on Oct 17th I will fly to India with my wife for 2 months. The four days I have between Germany and India won’t be enough to receive a new ikamet. So what is the best solution here? I imagine to scenarios:

    (1) It seems that the only option I have is to leave for India on my old ikamet, then let it expire and re-enter Turkey in December as a tourist on the 90 days period. Then I can apply for the aile ikameti anew. In that case, would my foreigner ID be changed? I guess the cost would be also higher for a new application than if I would transfer between two types of residence. Do you know the for a new 3 year family application?

    (2) Or alternatively; would it be possible to file the transfer application from student ikamet to family ikamet in mid October after my new passport has been issued, but schedule the appointment date for end of December, when we are back from India? In this way I could do a transfer, however I would still have to re-enter Turkey as a tourist because my old ikamet would be expired by December.

    • Addition: I called 157 twice and got different information from two people.. it seems the case is a bit too complicated for them.

      • Hi Marian,

Unfortunately, 157 is usually our go to for these sorts of issues so we wouldn’t be able to give a fully confident answer either. However, if you do decide to go via route number 1, your foreigner ID number is allocated to you, not a particular passport, so that should remain the same.

Last we checked, you can’t transition between any type of other residence permit to a family residence permit (in regards to renewal), so you’d have to treat the family residence permit as a first time application regardless. So we’re a bit unclear as to the “transfer” aspect you mention. If you end up applying for the first time, then doing so on an e-visa (your first option) would seem like the easiest route (and likely your only option). The family permit does have more stringent requirements though, so do be sure to follow the requisites.

If you discover anything that would be useful for others in regards to the process, please do let us know. Best of luck with everything!

  12. hello. im renewing my student residence permit and my meeting is the next day (26th September) but my passport is stolen from some people tht came and took it from me in the name of the police and i cant find those people. they took my watch my money and my passport and they asked me for money (1000$) so they would give me my passport back . now i dont know what to do for my ikamet . is there any solution i have all documents excepy my orijinal passport but i have a copy of it. can anyone please help?

    • You should go to an official police station and discuss this with them, as well as contacting 157 and getting their advice. It’s unfortunately outside our area of expertise. Best of luck with everything.

  13. Hi,
Please is it possible for someone in Turkey to process your work permit visa in Turkey? He has a citizenship card and also an employer. Is there anything like awaiting visa.
    Please answer me.
    Thanks

    • Hi John. The employed is responsible for processing the work visa. If you have any particular questions, you could always have the person receiving the permit call the official help line at 157.

  14. Hi,

I am doing an uzatma application for student residence permit. However, I live and work in a hostel, but the hostel does not have any documents to support my stay there. My first residence permit period is over now so I really need to apply for a new one soon. Can you suggest me any solutions to my problem? Thank you so much.

    • Unfortunately, you would need proof of residence somewhere to maintain a residence permit (or renew). As far as we know, there’s no easy solution to this aside from finding a place willing to let you officially say you live there.

  15. I have lost my work permit
    And Iven i don’t have a fotocopie
This days I’m gone apply for schengen visa

  16. I’ve heard that the time from making the appointment till having the interview (for first time residence permit) can be as long as 3, even 6 months! I really don’t won’t to be a prisoner of Turkey, not being able to go to my home country even in the case of family emergency. So, I was thinking to state my hotel address at the time of application, go to my home country, and then, a month or so before the interview rent a proper flat. Would it be possible? What happens if the applicant comes to the interview with the address that is different from the one at the time of application?

    • Although this might not be what is officially listed, we’ve been made aware of several occasions where people attended an appointment with a different address listed than that on the application. As long as all the documentation meets the criteria, in those instances they’ve changed the details in the system on their end at the time of the appointment and there’s been no real issue. You might want to consult 157 and see if even they give the go ahead if you want total peace of mind.

  17. Hello .
im married and lived in Turkey for 2 years and half now with a turkish citizen . we have one kids and expecting the second one .
my passport expire day is less than 6 months january 2018 and my permit will be expire in 7 days so i couldnt renew my permit because i have no valid passport . i cannot eitheir travel now because in my country for a new passport you need to wait at least 1 month and by that time my visa will be also expire and i have to take an appointment for new visa wich take in my country at least 3 months on the online system . i want to know after the expiration of my family permit how many days the law allow me to stay . and is there any tax to pay ? untill i solve my passport issue. and is it in my situation can i be ban ? and can i renew easily my permit after expiration .

    • We’d suggest talking to local consulate of your country of citizenship. Most consulates are able to issue new passports so you wouldn’t have to leave the country to receive it. If they can give it to you in a month, then you’d be able to receive it in time for your January expiration (at which point, you can apply for renewal). If your consulate is unable to help, then consider reaching out to 157 and explaining your situation and seeing if they have a workaround. Best of luck!

  18. hi dear
I am going to buy an apartment in Istanbul and i want to know how long does it take to get long term residence permit ?

  19. hi ya, I rang 157 to see how my process is getting on (re-newal which I did online) and they couldn’t really help. Is there somewhere online that I can check this out? Also I will leave Turkey for Christmas and gather I can leave on a 15 day pass. Do you know where I can take this from please? Thankyou for all this great information btw 🙂

    • Hi Annie,

157 should be able to look up your details, so perhaps try contacting and speaking with someone else? It is very hit or miss in our experience.

That being said, what step in the process are you currently on? If you’re simply waiting for the arrival of your new card, then you should be able to go into the migration office of your district and request the necessary paperwork to leave. Once received, we suggest making sure you take photocopies of all the paperwork and receipts of payment when you go to and from the Turkish airport.

Perhaps the easiest method would simply be to leave normally and come back in on an e-visa? Just be aware that this does mean a break in continued residency (if aiming to eventually get a long-term residence permit).

  20. If ı am dual citizenship and for exmaple if am current in turkey with my citizenship B and i want to change to my citizenship A passport what should i do…..

  21. Hello, I completed my application and waiting for my resident permit card and I have 15 days to travel out of the country. I wonder what will happen if I stay more than 15 days?

  22. 29th Nov was my appointment date I got to the immigration office at fatih Istanbul the officer in charge took my expired residence permit card and told me that my card was cancelled by the police because they went to verify the address and found out I moved away from there and I didn’t change my residence address. Please I want you to advice me on what to do ?

  23. My daughter is abroad for family commitment. Her Resident Permit will Expire on December 10th 2017. She already has an appointment to Extend the Resident Permit on March 5th 2018. She has the plan to come Turkey only One Day before the Expiration Date, Is it legal?

  24. Hello, I have a resident permit which expires in January 25, 2017, and I recently got an appointment for new resident, my appointment date is on March 06, 2017, So I would like to go to Afghanistan for 3 weeks the I will come back. So please let me know can I go to Afghanistan within this period as one and half month is remained for my resident permit?, am I allowed to leave Turkey and come back before appointment date?, also how long can I stay outside?

    Regards,

    • You can only travel on the dates that your residence permit is valid. So for example, those dates between January 25 and March 6th, you would need to be in Turkey already. Your only other option for after the 25th would be to try to arrive on an e-visa if there’s one valid for you. This would, however, break up the “continued residency” portion if you’re aiming to reach the five-year milestone for a longer term residence permit.

    • Hi, I submitted my application for a month now and each time I check online, it always shows the evaluation process of my application has not started yet

Is that normal after 1 month of submission

  25. Hi. I really hope you can help enjoy out. I’m danish and lived in Turkey for almost 3 years and never had any problems with my residence permits or reneweal of these. This summer I worked as a tour guide and also maintained a work permit and a new residence permit. My work visa expired (as this was a season job) and I then went to extent my residence permit as I always do, as I’m still living here. To my shock they rejected my application and I was told to leave turkey within 10 days. This was yesterday, and I’m going to Denmark tomorrow. The plan was to return on 28 December – but I can’t find out if I can come back to Turkey as a normal tourist on my 90/180 days, and then apply for a new residence permit, or if I’m just “banned”? I’m not going to pay any fines and it’s not stated anywhere that I can’t come back. I called 157 several times and they told me that I should be able to come back without any problems; but that I have to ask in the airport tomorrow. First of all; why is it not possible to get a residence permit after a legal work-permit expires? Some one told me they made a new rule this year; that they are afraid I will obtain illegal work now here. This has never been my intention. I’m so frustrated, and I can’t get a clear answer. I talked with immigration, the embassy, lawyers, experts, and they all give different answers. Some say I can come back, some say I have to stay in Denmark many months. I live in Turkey, worked over the summer, all legal, and then wanted to extent my residence permit, as I still live here. What is wrong by this? I’m going crazy over this and it really tears me apart, so maybe someone can explain to me if I’m able to come back to my home 28december or what I should do from here? Right now the plan is to ask tomorrow in the airport and then try the Turkish embassy in Denmark once I’m in Denmark.

    • Hi Sara. Sorry to hear about your situation. We’re not legal experts in any sense and most of our knowledge comes from the experiences of those that have shared their stories with us. Our instinct here is that the only “definitive” answer you’ll get is at the airport. However, if they don’t seem to have any knowledge of a ban or complications to your passport, we’d (personally) avoid pushing the issue there and then you can hopefully broach the issue more openly at your local embassy/consulate in Denmark. Best of luck. If you feel inclined to share what happens with us, perhaps we can use it to assist others in the future.

      • Thanks for the response.
To follow up; I did ask in the airport and they could not see any ban on my passport, but when I came to Istanbul they still asked for my residence permit, where I showed them my rejection letter, and after some phone calls and a lot of control they gave me the exit sign. Maybe they were only checking if I had to pay any fine. Anyway, the police in the first Turkish airport told me that I would maybe get a problem on the way back (again, what to make of that answer) but he didn’t think so, and advised me to ask the embassy in Denmark.

Now I’m in Denmark. Yesterday I tried to call the Turkish embassy in Copenhagen and was waiting in line 2,5 hours. Never got to speak to them as call-time was up. Today I tried again, waited “only” one hour and got through. I was told it was “not their business” and that they could not help with anything..

Now I’m back to 0. We will try to call Goc Idaresi again Monday (the ones that advised me to ask the Turkish embassy). I can’t believe why no one can explain to me exactly what to do from here. Also I can’t find any similar situations or or guidance online, I’m going in circles, don’t know how or when I can travel home is an awful feeling; but feeling helpless is just as bad.

        • hi Sara, I am very curious about your situation can you please inform us what happened as this new law changes are not being told and we discover them at unfortunate situations like yours. I really hope to hear a good follow up to your events.

  26. Hello

I arrived in Turkey on December 5 2017 and I applied for a short term residence permit but my appointment date is on the 20th of March and I have a 30-day visa which means my visa will expire on the 3rd of January. Hope I wont be having any problems with the Immigration or The AUTHORITIES and please What should I do?. Thank you

    • Hi Stone. As long as you have your appointment application documents, you’re permitted to stay in the country beyond the expiration of your visa until the date of your appointment. You will be unable to enter and exit Turkey during this time however.

  27. Hi,
I would like to apply for a short term ikamet when I’m back in Turkey in March. I will be in Turkey from March 20th until April 21st and then I want to come back to Turkey on May 4th. Is it possible to go out of Turkey when I make an appointment for my ikamet but when I don’t have my appointment or ikamet yet but I do have a valid tourist visa (valid until the end of May).

    • You should always call 157 for any last minute changes, but generally yes. You can arrive, book your appointment, travel for the validity of your visa, and then return to Istanbul before your visa expires for your appointment. Following the expiration of your visa, you must be in Turkey, as having an appointment booked will mean that you’re staying legally.

  28. Hi
My friend lives in Turkey with his wife and son, his son goes to a Turkish school. My friend has discovered his residency has expired what can he do.
    Kind regards
    Andy

    • Hi Andy. This is something that he should contact the official help line at 157 about. The general rule is that you should leave and pay the fine, then return on a valid visa and apply for a new residence permit. However, perhaps the person on the phone could provide better advice considering the circumstances or if he goes to his immigration office (where he received the permit), they may help him.

  29. Hello!

I have held a normal touristic residence permit for a year now, and I also obtained a work permit 6 months ago. My touristic permit is going to end soon and I need to know if I need to review that one, while I still hold a valid work permit. And if I don’t need t renew the touristic permit, do I need to declare it anywhere that now I have changed to work permit? I am asking because I assumed I will not need to renew it, but today I received a messaged from Goc Idaresi, saying that I have 60 days remaining to renew my permit and I thought maybe I need to declare.

    • Hi Narges. A work permit supersedes a residence permit, so it’s most likely that you received an automated message, but have nothing to worry about. It’s not necessary to return the residence permit, but of course it’s advisable to hang on to it in a safe place. If you’re especially concerned, you could contact the official help line at 157 and they could look you up in the system to confirm that your work permit is the valid method of which you’re currently living in Turkey.

  30. Hello, wondering if anyone can help me with this. I have been in turkey since 21st oct 2017 and married my Turkish husband in November. My 90 days is finished on my Evisa, I attended my residency appointment on 25th Jan 2018 and am currently waiting for my family residence card to arrive. I need to travel home to the UK on 6th Feb and I’m pretty sure my residence card won’t have arrived by then. My first question is, can my husband accept my card for me when it arrives and post it to me in the UK for when I return? Secondly I need to return to turkey on 31st March, if my card isn’t with me by then will they refuse me entry to turkey on my arrival? I have the relevant paperwork showing that I have attended my appointment and am waiting for the card but I will be in the UK longer than the permitted 15 day window. Also if I changed my passport to my married name when I’m in the uk could I return on an Evisa if I still don’t have my card or will they still be aware that I’ve overstayed my 90 days on my previous passport? Also if I change my passport to my married name when I’m back in the uk is it easy enough to get my residency permit changed to my new passport number and married name? Apologies for all the questions but I’m getting very stressed that they will refuse me entry when I return and receive a ban if I don’t have residence card. Please help!!!!

  31. Hello…iam a 2.5 years of marriage to a Turkish…iam looking forward to applying for Turkish citizenship after the legal 3years of marriage requirement. Within the 2.5 years of my staying i havent gone out of Turkey and by july 2018 will complete my 3year in marriage requirement.

  32. hello Sir/Mam,
Greetings! I just want to any Advise from you, my problems is my working visa/permit application was rejected but we have learned it via phone because my manager called the ministry to follow up may application and the woman he spoke to told him that my applicatiin is rejected but almost 3 weeks now the Ministry doesnt send us notification regarding rejection of my application theyve said that the Head or ministry head need to sign the rejection documents and they will send us notification of whatever result it maybe but today theyve said their head is in istanbul . what is happening is not good I Just need that email notification about my rejected visa but the make it so hard for me because I cant re apply if the notificaion of visa rejection doesnt send us yet.do you have idea of what I must need tp do .
    Thank you best regards.

    • Hello. This is indeed unfortunate and a bit outside our ability to control. You may want to call 157 and speak to a representative yourself or visit the office to which you filed your application. Best of luck!

    • Once you have your residence permit, you can travel for the duration of that permit. However, it has no impact on receiving visas for other countries, so you’d have to apply for a tourist visa according to your Passport requisites.

  33. Hello,
How many times can I renew or extend a short term residence permit? I’ve heard from different sources that I cannot renew it more than 3 times, and from other sources that I can renew it as many times as I want to… I’m confused. Already here for 3 years with short terms residence permit (3 times renewed), can I re-apply again for the same status?

    Thanks for answering

  34. Is there any chance/possibility to get the Turkish citizenship if I’ve always got (4 times) only short-term (1 year) residence permits as a tourist? Thanks a lot beforehand for any reply!

  35. My son was born in Turkey, he is a year and 6 months old and is yet to get a residence permit. We just applied and waiting for his appointment date. Please is there a possibility that he will be granted one? Have you had any similar issues?
Secondly, what documents are we required to present on the appointment day?

    • Hello, in general, yes, your child should also be able to apply for a residence permit as easily as anyone else. As far as we know, the validity of the stay for a baby born to foreign nationals in Turkey is six months, so you may want to confirm with the official help line regarding the validity of your appointment and any supplemental documents. You can reach them at 157.

  36. Dear sir/madam,

My wife is student in Turkey and she wants to make an appointment to get RP card. I have rp card myself (foreigner student). GOC needs to have the address you live and if you live in university it is easy they give you a letter. However, if you live at home it should be notarized. Would you please let me know whether this document is really required? Noter wants a lot to do this
I don’t know whether I and my wife go to noter and they give us a paper which shows that my wife is staying with me maybe it costs much less
    do you have any info?

    Thanks

    • Hi Ali,

You’ll need a notarized proof of residence. If she signs as she’s living with you, rather than directly signing with the landlord, then the validity of her residence permit will only be valid as long as yours, and a few people on our team have cited issues with this in the past once arriving to the appointment. We’d recommend visiting a different noter and seeing if they give you a better price and calling 157 if you want to receive answers from an official source. Best of luck!

  37. My Mother is Planning on going back to Europe. but she would like to keep her main Adress in Turkey.
Is it possible To renew her Short Term Permit every year, and Live 9 Months Abroad/3 Months in Turkey?

“It would appear that under new guidelines, there is no limit to time spent abroad for a short-term residence permit. It should be noted that when applying for a long-term permit, they often consider how long you’ve spent outside the country in making their decision.”

    • In theory this should be fine, you’ll just need to be sure she’s in Turkey from the date she’s made her renewal appointment until she receives her updated card.

  38. My residence permit will expire 31/07/2018 and my passport should be renewed by 16/06/2018 back in my country. How can I enter Turkey to extend my residence permit. Taking into consideration that renewal of passport in my country means issuing a new one (I will keep the old canceled passport).

    • This is a tricky one. Are you not able to renew your passport without having to go abroad? Or perhaps you could return on a regular visa if you’re eligible for one. We’d suggest contacting the official help line at 157 and trying for a definitive answer. If you find a satisfactory response, please let us know so we can share in case someone has a similar issue in the future.

  39. hello i applied for a new permit and forgt to change my home address i m afraid it is sent to the old address. what should i do?

    • If they don’t have an updated address, then you’ll want to get in touch and clear it up as soon as possible. You can contact the official help line at 157 and maybe they can offer some more guidance on the process.

    • Hello. You can apply for a family residence permit, but you’ll need a sponsor – ideally a Turkish citizen to get the optimal length on the validity of the permit. If a foreigner with a valid permit sponsors you, the family residence permit is only valid according to the length of their permit. Otherwise, you could also apply for individual residence permits. You can call the official help line at 157 if you have any specific questions about your situation.

        • Unfortunately, no. They would need permits of their own. If you get a work permit, you could apply for a family residence permit at that point or try to find a local sponsor.

          • Thanks once again.
I’m planning to visit turkey with my family on tourist e-visa (I only can apply for e-vais only which give one month only because Turkish embassy is far from where I’m living!), my question is what if our e-visa expired before we get our resident permissions! What should we do? Is it allowed to extend the e-visa while we are in turkey by applying through the website or should I visit the police station? Or what are the other options if available?
One of the resident permit requirements is the TAX Number which I have got one already and I also opened bank account since last year. Now does my family members need TAX Number for each one of them? Or mine is enough to cover them? Thank you

          • Hi Fathi. Once you’ve arrived and booked your residence permit appointment BEFORE the expiration of your e-visa, you are able to stay in Turkey until your appointment date (even if your e-visa expires in the meantime). Every individual needs a tax number, including wife and children. Best of luck!

  41. Hi, my short term residence permit is going to expire on 8/9/2018. i am scheduled to leave the country in the end of June and will return in November of this year. i can apply for renewal before the two months of expiry, but at that time i will have leaved the country. is there any possibility to apply for renewal before two months.?

  42. Hello! I’m a foreign student and I have been here for almost 3 years, but this is my first time applying for ikamet by myself because usually the immigration representatives came to our school. Long story short my passport expired and I had to change it so that’s why my ikamet finished earlier (14 April 2018) than my other friends. I sent all of the required documents by PTT, and now still waiting for it.
However these days there are so many polices everywhere and they are stopping people randomly too look at their ID card. I have been stopped once but that was before my ikamet has finished, and they almost stopped me yesterday but I kinda dodged them. So my question is if I get stop by police in the future (hopefully not!) what kind of proof I can give to them so they know that my new ikamet is being processed? And I kinda feel scared because these polices are always in the metro (which I am using everyday) near my living place day and night.

    • That sounds like it would make anyone nervous. Unfortunately as far as we know, there’s not really a guaranteed solution as you are technically here without a visa/permit. In general, we know that many foreigners will often just show their ID from home (drivers license for example) and try explaining themselves in English and this is enough for them to wave you on. You could carry a copy of your old documents (expired passport/permit and a student ID) and your PTT receipt as well just to be extra safe and if it escalates, try your best to explain yourself. In general, they’re searching people for security concerns and not because they are concerned with this type of issue.

  43. Can I enter Turkey with my short-term (2 years) residency permit after being outside Turkey for more than 6 months?

If yes, can you please link an official website or something of that matter.

    Thanks & regards,

    • Hi Ahmed. As far as we know, there’s no restriction on time spent outside and its effect on your residence permit’s validity. You should be able to enter. The section of their website that details the terms and conditions of the residence permit seems to be down, but you can try refreshing a little later: https://e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr/

      Best of luck!

  44. Dear WebMaster,

Please How to get same appointment day for me and my family in case I apply resident permit for everyone separately. Is there any option in the online application would allow me to do that? Thank you in advance for your support.

  45. Just a heads up for those who are extending their short term residence permits now:
On the e ikamet webpage, the English version does not work correctly and the application should be done in Turkish to be able to proceed (glitches in the system). Secondly, the documentation required is now much more…. you will need a criminal background report from both your country and Turkey. Also, you will be required to get a health form from a STATE hospital stating that you have no illnesses. (The waiting time for this is a few weeks!) And, you will need a statement of purpose to say why you are staying in Turkey. So, if you think you have sent all the required documents (the ones listed on the application form) you are going to receive a message from the Migration Office tellIng you to bring these documents within 30 days. Get started on them ASAP because they will take time (maybe even more than 30 days)

    • Hey Laura, how long does it take for them to give any feedback regarding our applications? I sent all of my documents and still receiving no news. It’s been a week

  46. Informative FAQ section. Please share tje information about the person who applied the residence in turkey but could not given / approved. What is the solution? Should he apply for a new residence permit? All details please.

  47. Hello sorry if this is the wrong place to ask for this but I’m just curious will we be able to pass through Türk Vatandaş line in the airport if we have an ikamet? I myself have a student ikamet. My friend once told me that she went through the Türk Vatandaş line with the ikamet and they accepted her.

  48. Hello!
I am looking for some information about penalties. I used to have ikamet until end of June 2017. After that I came back to my home country but I can back and forward to Turkey for visiting. Now I decided to move back to Turkey in a more stable situation and I applied again for a short term residency permit. At the appointment they asked me to pay a penalty of 460 TL to cover the months in between the old ikamet and the new application, because in their opinion I was supposed to ask for extension last year.
I think this is an abuse, but how can I prove it? Do you know any details about the regulations?
    Thanks in advance

    • Hi Luci. Unless you contact and work with a lawyer in this field, we’re not entirely sure what to advise. Our understanding is there is a daily penalty for each day beyond the first ten days that you stay, but of course this varies from the various accounts we’ve heard. If you do manage to get out of it, we’d love to learn more in an effort to help others. You could always try calling the official help line at 157 and seeing what their official stance is on late fees.

  49. Hello everyone,
I wonder if someone can enter Turkey if his/her short term residence permit expires while he/she is aroad.

  50. without student enrollment certificate can i have residence permit , can i have my residence permit , when i cant able to pay school fees , but i have student visa already and i’m already arrived in turkey, please can i do

  51. Does one application suffice for your whole dependent family? And what is the age limit for your kids to be part of the permenant residency application?

  52. Until June of this year I had my student residence permit as Erasmus’ student. Before the end of this document I applied for new residence permit this time not as a student, but normal short term one. I have not known that to activate my application I had to print it so I have done that 13 days after my student residence permit expired. So when my student residence permit was until 1.06 I applied (activate) for new one on 23.06. What in this situation can happened? What I should do? I still did not get the date of my appoinment.

    • Hi Claudia. If you’re unable to get an appointment before the previous permit expires, usually they require a fine and possibly a temporary stay outside the country. We’d suggest contacting the official help line at 157.

  53. Hi
    i am Dipak.
I applied for two year residence permit two months before through the agents . They took €200 but its been 2 and half months and they said still imniyet fatih didn’t response that documents are accepted or not. Is this true ?
Why did they take too much time to make decission?
Tomorrow my permit for one year will be valid up. And i still didn’t get official paper .
Sad. Plz help what should i do?.

    • Hi Dipak. Sorry to hear of your stressful situation. Might we suggest contacting 157 and seeing if they’re able to give you an update? If not, we’d suggest going to the local office (where you would have your appointment) and seeing if you can get an update in person.

  54. Hello , Please what is the allowed duration to stay outside turkey while holding a student residency permit and thank you .

  55. I am a foreigner who will marry a Turkish citizen. After marriage I’ll have a double surname, but my international passport will be with one surname (my maiden surname). Can I still apply for family residence? And if yes, will i have any problems at customs, leaving Turkey to visit my homeland, having a passport for one surname and residence permit – for a double surname?

    I’d really appreciate your answer!

  56. Hello
They asked for additional documents in the of my randevu which was on 19.06.2018
I still i could not afford these documents what should i do pls??? And what will be my situation ?

    • Hi Sena. If you applied for your randevu before May, you can still push forward with the original requirements (not the new ones) and emphasize that these weren’t originally required from you. They may (or may not) accept this, but we’ve heard that they have made exceptions for people who booked before the new document requirements. You just have to be really clear with them. However, if there’s any way you can provide the new documents, it will likely make the process much easier. Hope it works out and sorry we’re unaware of any other workaround.

  57. Hi this is me itisam from pakistan..
I have applied for residence permit 2 months ago..now i want to go ro canada for a confrence… So please guide me.how i should apply for canada visa…

  58. Hello, I want to apply for short term residence permit for my family after buying property, My question is that 1 )Would it be possible to obtain Citizenship?
2 Are we allow to work ?
3 Can my kids take admissions in the schools ?

    • As far as we know it would require property in value of over one million US Dollars to gain citizenship. At that point, you’d be able to work legally. If you’re here on a normal residency however, you’d need to apply for a job that will issue a work permit. Children are able to attend school with legal residency. Best of luck!

  59. Hello,
I am currently on a fixed term work permit. Since I gave my notice, the permit will be declared void. Then I offically have 10 days to leave the country. I started my application process for a long-term permit (I stayed here more than 8 years and am married to a Turkish spouse), but I didn’t get a date assigned yet (It says I will be called and given a date). In the meantime when I leave Turkey, can I re-enter with a tourist visa (I am a German national) to get a 90 extra days to take care of the permit?

    Sincerely,
    Wolfgang

  60. Hello,
My name is Yoro. I have applied for the renewal of my resident permit for a student (more than 21 days go) but I haven’t received the card yet. I have to travel after few days, so I call the center (157) they told me I have to send an email to an office to get the authorization to leave the country for 15 days. The problem is I completely forgot the email (it starts with istanbul.begelerdirm……..but i wrote it wrong somehow). Could you be kind enough to give the email address or tell me what to do in order to get the stamp document to leave the country.

  61. Hi, I am on AIESEC internship visa working in a language school,First of all the immigartion officer was so angry and very rude in his attitude and cracnked jokes about my nationality, he asked me to pay the work permit fee also which on the other hand the internees didnt pay in other cities i was supposed to pay 480 TL but he added work permit 675 tl in it so i paid almost like 1400 TL including health insurance after paying all these things he still didnt approve my application by saying i need to show him origmal contract and orignal contract always rests in the Aiesec office it took me 17 days to show him that contract when the aiesec official said to him that all our students pay only 450 lira not 12oo he went so angry and rude i dont know what was his problem with me the guy told him that in trabzon we get this card in 8 days but after paying too much money he said you need to wait for 1 month i m living in rize hardly 1 or 2 foreginers come here in a month but still he is telling me to wait for so long i am afraid that weather he approved my application or still hanging i dont beleive him he gave me a paper and said u can travel for 15 days on it i tried to check the online status of my application result its saying no result found can someone help me what does it means m i worrying to much or i m right that he didnt approve my application ?

    • Hi Salman,

This seems like a particularly complicated issue and we’re sorry to hear of all the inconvenience. Have you contacted AIESEC? They assuredly have someone to deal with such issues.

We’d also suggest 157 and ask to clarify with an agent there. All the best!

  62. Hello, I have applied for short term residence permit and granted 2years but I have not received the card. How can I tract when my card will be ready. I have been waiting one month now.

  63. Hello,

I didn’t go to my residency appointment because I had to wait a day for the rent paper and I also had an exam the next day so I decided to study not knowing that my permit appointment will be cancelled a day after the appointment.
I made another appointment, but it is around 17 days after my visa expires (visa expires at 14 November, appointment is at 2 January), what should I do in this case? According to the info here it says I’m okay to stay as long as I have an appointment, is this information up to date?

    Thanks!

    • As long as you booked your appointment BEFORE your tourist visa expired, you’re legally allowed to stay until the date of your appointment even if your tourist visa expires in the process.

  64. Hi. Is it going to be hard navigating around Turkey while I try to get my PR? I have never been there before, but I’m worried that I will be unable to locate some places. I do not speak Turkish:-(. Are there your guides that can help me? Also, can I apply for my PR the first to second week of my 90 days in Turkey?
    Thanks in advance!🙂

  65. hello , my residence permit is done in Istanbul but I am traveling from Antalya airport to Lebanon , can I travel or I have to travel from Istanbul because my permit is done there
    thanks

  66. Hi.
I made an appointment 2 months ago and never went because I had to leave the country for some work. Goc helpline said the application will be removed within 10days. Now I have returned back to Turkey and need to book a new appointment. However the e-ikamet.goc.gov still has my previous application and I cannot cancel it from my end and thus I am not able to file another application as well.

  74. Hello, we have just renewed our ikamet. We have not moved since we first got our ikamet last year and we have a notarised rental agreement, so we haven’t had to visit the Nüfus Müdürlüğü Office. However, some non-Turkish friends tell me that we should also visit the local Muhtar to register with him in the Mahalle. Is that a legal requirement, too?

  75. Hello,

  78. Hello,
Is there a way to check the authenticity of a residence permit card please? In other words, is there an official web site where you could put the residency card number and other details and it tells you if this a real and not fake residency card please? For example, I got a residence permit card issued through a lawyer from Turkey, however, I would like to make sure that this card is actually issued by the Turkish government and not a fake card. How can I check this pls.

  79. Hi if anybody with an official account or someone who’s genuinely been Ina situation similar. I would be so greatful for a response or comment. I need to be set straight.

    So my question is.
My last residency card has expired but I have applied for a new one. I’ve gone to the meetings and I’ve gone through the whole rigmarole of what the residency process is. I’m currently waiting for my card to come through.
I am although expecting to leave turkey in 2 weeks time. The time I’m expecting to be out of the country (Turkey) for, will be 10 days.

Do I need to get a travel visa considering I have no residency or visa at the moment and I’m awaiting my card OR can I use the piece of paper that they gave to me, in which they stamped on my return to Turkey.

    • if the dates are still valid on the piece of paper you have, then all is good.
Other option is if your card arrive, have it delivered to where you are and then enter Turkey with the card.

  80. I will renew my residence permit in April this year but I am now living in a different province. Because my province has changed will I need to lodge a first time application rather than a renewal?
    Thanks

    • you’ll lodge for renewal.
in the very beginning they system will ask you “Do you want to change your province of stay?” and you’ll say “Yes”

      • Hi. I actually have one year left on my residency but I want to change my province from Izmir to Istanbul. Is this a renewal as well or is there an easier way?

  81. My family just got their visa (Tourist visa for 30days); I will be applying for Ikamet for my family based on purchase of immovable property in Turkey.
Can I schedule the interview date now (when my family hasn’t yet arrive in Turkey?)

Hint: the online system allows you to go ahead with the process even if the person hasn’t entered the country.

I am asking because during interview one of the documents they want is a copy of the “Entry Stamp page” of the passport and there they may find out that the appointment was booked before they arrived, which is not a problem in my view. But because immigration laws in Turkey are interpreted differently from person to person, I want to be sure.

    Thanks
