Insider Trading: Wearable Sculptures by Sabrina Fresko

Sabrina Fresko Maske SergisiTucked away in a cozy studio just at the edge of Ortaköy, Sabrina Fresko masterfully shapes hunks of wax into beautiful pieces of wearable art. Upon entering her studio, Simya Gallery, you find yourself in a dazzling, shiny world of angles and gemstones. Shelves and display cases teem with pieces from her various collections, which are centered around themes such as time, wearing Istanbul and continuity. The latest inspiration is waves, whose fluid contours manifest in silver and bronze throughout the gallery. Simya means alchemy, and without a doubt this space holds the magic and intrigue that its namesake conjures.

Sabrina, an architect by training, sort of fell into designing wearable sculptures – she didn’t start out with an interest in jewelry, but she had an idea and went with it. In addition to jewelry she also makes sculptures, some of which are displayed in the studio.

While visiting the studio is a must, the most rewarding part is meeting Sabrina herself. Twinkly-eyed yet soft spoken, it’s truly a pleasure to listen to her explain the different pieces on display. Some days you can even meet her beautiful cat Sis, who is usually stretched out and asleep amongst the impressive work.

A neat thing about the studio is that she also gives seminars and workshops. On any given Wednesday or Saturday, apprentices are seen carving away at chunks of wax guided by Sabrina’s gentle and helpful instruction. In fact, anyone can and should attend. Sabrina is a master usta at guiding students in the way of wearable sculptures. She also hosts seminars on subjects that range from classical music to art history.

So, if you would like to adorn yourself with a unique art piece, learn how to make jewelry, find out about something new and interesting, or you just want to experience a magical little corner in Ortaköy, make your way to Simya Gallery. You won’t be disappointed.
