Grouper, the long-running ambient and dream-pop project of Liz Harris, comes to Fiba Salon İKSV on Wednesday 4 November, bringing together the hazy textures, intimate songwriting, and quietly experimental approach that have defined one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary ambient music. Harris has spent more than two decades working between drone, psychedelic folk, experimental pop, and lo-fi songcraft, gradually turning sparse guitar, piano, field recordings, and layered vocals into music that feels both deeply personal and deliberately elusive. Tickets are available via Passo.
Harris began releasing music as Grouper in the mid-2000s, initially working with dense layers of guitar, distortion, reverb, and voice. Her breakthrough came with 2008’s Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill, an album that brought clearer melodies and more conventional song structures into her previously amorphous sound without sacrificing its sense of distance. The record became a defining point in Grouper’s development, placing Harris within the broader lineage of dream pop while retaining a strong connection to experimental and psychedelic music.
Her subsequent work has continued to shift between abstraction and intimacy. The two-part A I A expanded Grouper’s ambient and tape-based language, while 2014’s Ruins reduced the palette considerably, centering piano, voice, and field recordings. Grid of Points followed in 2018 with a notably concise collection of songs, before Shade in 2021 drew together the atmospheric and song-oriented sides of Harris’s work. Across these releases, her music has become more direct without losing the ambiguity and restraint that have long been central to it.
Live, Grouper’s music depends less on spectacle than on shifts in texture, volume, repetition, and attention. Harris’s performances translate recordings known for their blurred edges and layered production into a more immediate setting, preserving the tension between recognisable songs and sound that seems to dissolve around them. Her 4 November appearance offers a chance to encounter that balance in person, from the submerged melodies of her better-known work to the quieter experimental spaces that have remained essential to the project.
