Retrospective – Expat Spotlight #24: Media

A collaboration of Yabangee and ATÖLYE – we proudly continue with a new, exciting season of Expat Spotlight – a monthly series showcasing the freshest, most inspiring contributions being made by Istanbul’s diverse international community to the city’s cultural, sporting, humanitarian, and business spheres. An opportunity to share moving stories, reflect on personal experiences and participate in a resourceful dialogue, we invite foreigners and locals alike to come and embolden others.

Taking place in English, the latest season of Expat Spotlight continues on Wednesday 23 October with the theme of ”media”.

The event starts at 19:30, with doors set to open at 19:00. No need to RSVP to join. As always, refreshments are provided.

Master of Ceremonies:

Jennifer Hattam is a freelance journalist from San Francisco who has been living in Istanbul since 2008. She writes about environmental, social, and urban issues, as well as art, culture, food, and travel for publications including CityLab, Culinary Backstreets, Deutsche Welle, Discover, Hyperallergic, Lonely Planet, and The Washington Post.

Speakers:

Fariba Nawa is a freelance journalist, author of Opium Nation and host of the Istanbul-based news podcast On Spec. She reported on America’s wars in the last 20 years from Afghanistan to Iraq, and settled in Istanbul four years ago with her family. She co-founded a news agency in Kabul and trained journalists in Cairo. Here, she writes for the New Yorker, Financial Times, Foreign Policy and reports for radio programs such as PRI’s The World and Reveal. She has won awards in journalism but considers her greatest achievement the ability to remain freelance for two decades because she values the importance of independent journalism.

Karin Johansson is a South African journalist living in Istanbul. She is currently the Executive Producer for Business at international broadcaster TRT World, overseeing all economic content for the channel including its flagship business show Money Talks. Prior to joining TRT World four years ago, Karin held senior level positions at the African operations of financial broadcasters Bloomberg and CNBC where she managed teams of journalists from across the continent.

Christian Feiland started as freelance Radio and TV-Journalist in Berlin. With time he acquired the skills of a Cameraman, Director and Producer. Productions that he participated in have received various prestige prices. Chris is the founding and elected President of the Foreign Media Association (Yabancı Medya Derneği). Feiland is the co-founder of the street animal portal KirikKuyruk (BustedTails) and also active for other social causes.
In total, he has lived 27 years in Istanbul and is very proud of his Istanbul family is story reaching back to 1875. His ancestors worked in the Yildiz Palace for Abdül Hamid II as watch makers. His grandmother met Atatürk in person. Besides Germany, he grew up in Istanbul and Karachi/Pakistan.
