Dhafer Youssef is coming back to Istanbul on Tuesday 21 November to bring you the breeze of Middle Eastern musical traditions with contemporary jazz. He is taking the stage at Zorlu PSM with his new album “Streets of Minarets”. The album which has been in the making for 5 years is now ready to meet its audience in Istanbul. Born in Tunisia, Youssef is a master of blending traditional Middle Eastern music with contemporary jazz, creating a unique and mesmerizing sound that has earned him critical acclaim and a dedicated following around the world.
Growing up in a musical household, he was exposed to traditional Tunisian music from an early age. He began his musical journey by playing the oud, a traditional stringed instrument, and singing in the local choir.
In the late 1980s, Youssef moved to Vienna, Austria, to study music. There, he immersed himself in the city’s vibrant jazz scene and began experimenting with blending Middle Eastern and North African musical traditions with contemporary jazz. This fusion of styles became a hallmark of his unique sound.
Youssef released his debut album, “Musafir,” in 1996, which received critical acclaim and established him as a rising star in the world music scene. Since then, he has released several highly regarded albums, including “Electric Sufi” (2002), “Divine Shadows” (2006), and “Diwan of Beauty and Odd” (2016).
Throughout his career, Youssef has collaborated with renowned musicians from around the world, including Zakir Hussain, Richard Bona, Wolfgang Muthspiel, and Renaud Garcia-Fons, among others. These collaborations have further enriched his musical compositions and expanded his artistic horizons.
