The Sisters of Mercy bring their influential strain of gothic rock and post-punk to Paribu Art on Monday 14 September, led by founding vocalist and songwriter Andrew Eldritch. More than four decades after their formation, the band remains closely associated with the development of gothic rock, while their music has always reached beyond the genre through drum-machine rhythms, heavy guitars, electronic textures and Eldritch’s distinctive baritone. Formed in 1980 by Eldritch and guitarist Gary Marx, The Sisters of Mercy emerged from the post-punk underground with a deliberately stripped-down approach. Early singles including “Alice” and “Temple of Love” established the band’s dark, rhythmic character, while the introduction of the drum machine known as Doktor Avalanche became central to their sound. Their 1985 debut album, First and Last and Always, consolidated that early style and became one of the defining records of gothic rock, despite Eldritch’s longstanding reluctance to accept the label.
The band’s most striking transformation came with Floodland in 1987. Following the departure of the original lineup, Eldritch rebuilt the project around a much larger sonic palette, combining programmed rhythms with expansive guitars, choral arrangements and the theatrical production of Jim Steinman. Tracks such as “This Corrosion”, “Lucretia My Reflection” and “Dominion/Mother Russia” pushed the Sisters from underground post-punk into a more ambitious, widescreen form of rock. Vision Thing followed in 1990, shifting further toward hard rock and completing a remarkably concise trilogy of studio albums.
Although The Sisters of Mercy have not released a new studio album since Vision Thing, the group has remained an active touring act, with Eldritch the sole constant member across its history. Their live repertoire draws on the catalogue that established their reputation while also incorporating newer, previously unreleased material, keeping the band oriented toward performance rather than nostalgia alone.
