Insider Trading: Dansorium

dansorium (1)Taking dance lessons in Istanbul is a great way to keep fit, meet new people and enhance your Turkish skills. I have been taking tango lessons at Dansorium in Mecidiyeköy for two years. Ever since I started, having Tuesday “dance night” as part of my routine has energized me to make it through the workweek. I often peer into the rooms with other classes going on and wish I had time to take them all.

Here are some of the dance styles taught at the school:

Hip Hop: music-video-style choreography

Latin: A variety of social dances originating in Cuba including Salsa, Bachata and Merengue. You can come alone, no need to bring a partner!

Argentine Tango: An improvisational social dance known for intimate, sensual connection between partners. You can come alone, no need to bring a partner!

Sirtaki: A peppy Greek folk dance with arm-in-arm choreography

Turkish Folk Dances: Zeybek (from the Aegean Region), Horon (from the Black Sea Region)

Flamenco: A spicy Spanish dance involving stomped rhythms and a variety of props including a skirt, a fan and castanets

Lindy Hop: A fast-moving swing dance

Dansorium also provides a lot of little extras for students:

  • Free weekly Latin dance practice on Saturdays (even if you don’t take Latin lessons)
  • Free “dance-of-the-month” sessions. Each month, a different dance offered by the school is featured in free weekly lessons
  • Latin Dance night on Friday at Tiyatro Kafe in Beşiktaş
  • Social activities such as picnics, hiking trips and so on.

As a continuing student, I can say that the instructors are knowledgeable and professional. The school is also welcoming; it has a cafe where you can relax and grab a çay while waiting for classes to start.
