“Library for Memory and Eternity (Twin)” @ Ariel Sanat

Ariel Sanat will host “Library for Memory and Eternity (Twin)”, an outcome of collaboration between Sarkis and Norgunk, from Tuesday 29 November through Saturday 14 January. The exhibition is prepared by Ayşe Orhun Gültekin and Derya Yıldız.

Library for Memory

From the organizer:

Sometimes artworks glide through time. At times, they fall into step with the rapidly changing colors of the day, wrapped in wondrous apparel, while at others they resist the historical and social phenomena that surface at the end of centuries, eras and on the verge of new ones, or they simply provoke and transform them. Sharing in his nomadic nature, Sarkis’ work, shifting back and forth through time, invites the viewer to embark on journeys amid layers of memory. For memory is always plural, both thin stream and gushing river, each with its different sound, flow and channel. Sarkis listens to and records these sounds and movements as attentively as a seismographer, feeling them with his hands. Memory is not limited to origins; it goes beyond lineages and genealogies: it lives broken inside us, a leidschatz ballad.

The Library for Memory and Eternity, built in 2005 for the exhibition “A milestone”, passing through time, now rejoins its twin-library at Ariel Sanat, an outcome of the collaboration between Sarkis and Norgunk. Two furniture-statues facing one another, two treasuries of agony, an encounter amid the scent of roses.
