From the organizer:

The imminent US presidential election has far-reaching consequences across the globe. With one candidate largely promising a continuation of conventional US foreign policy and another indicating his intention to dramatically alter international norms, the Middle East has much to consider. The Munathara initiative has invited Arab opinion leaders and talented Arab youth to debate the motion, ‘Trump is Better for the Arab World,’ in a live televised debate in Istanbul, Turkey, on Saturday, October 29, 2016.

Munathara is a mission-driven organization that aims to promote a vibrant and democratic Arab public sphere by encouraging rational and constructive debate.

Each participant in Munathara’s debating competition, #DD24, uploaded a 99-second video defending their stance, for or against the motion. Online voters chose the top six videos, three for the motion and three against it. The six finalists will be flown to the live debate’s venue, Istanbul, to receive intensive training in the art of debate and to participate in the final round of the competition.

The two winners will be paired with experienced thought leaders to debate whether Trump is the better for the Arab world in the live debate in Istanbul, less than two weeks before the US presidential election.

Two panelists will argue for the motion: One of the two young winners of Munathara’s debating competition along with former Iraqi government adviser Mazin Al-Eshaiker. On the other side, the other young winner will be joined by Nagham Ghadri, a member of the opposition Syrian National Coalition, to argue against the motion. The debate will be moderated in Arabic.

While this will be Munathara’s 24th debate, more debates will continue to be held in the coming months as part of Munathara’s commitment to providing Arab youth, women and marginalized communities with an open platform to voice their views on pressing political and social issues.
