Organization Profile: Caritas

Editor’s Note: Caritas is one of the aid organizations that will receive funds and donations collected at the We Are Refugees II benefit concert, which will take place on Saturday 30 May. The event, hosted by Yabangee and Sonikraf, will be kick off at 4:30 pm at Tunnel Sahne in Asmalı Mescit. The evening will feature a number of notable Istanbul-based bands, like The Away Days, Golden Horn, The Young Shaven, and Peripheral Dots. Participants are encouraged to bring clothes and other donations that will be distributed to refugees from Syria. Concertgoers without goods or clothes to donate can make a 20 TL donation at the door.

Caritas is an international aid organization that is dedicated to serving all, regardless of religion, age, gender or nationality. In addition to running a variety of support services programs for refugees from Syria and other countries, they are always looking for donations to their cloakroom service. Find out more about how to donate below.

From Caritas:

We are always looking for donations for our cloakroom service for refugees and migrants. If you’d like to contribute by donating items, we currently have the greatest need for these goods:

*summer clothes and shoes

*children and baby clothes and shoes

*baby carriages

*working kitchen appliances in very good condition (kettle, oven, etc.)

Due to space limitations, we won’t be able to take spare small furniture, spare toys, or home decoration items. Please also note that we do not take food, cosmetics, medicines, second-hand underwear, second-hand towels or linen, or second-hand socks.

Unfortunately, we don’t have the means to come to your place and pick up the items, or pay for transportation. Before bringing or sending your donations, we kindly ask to call us at the 0212 234 4564 to make sure that there is someone to welcome you.

With your help, we aim to offer a service respectful of everyone’s dignity. With that in mind, we have a few guidelines:

1. All items must be in very good condition and clean! Please do not send anything that you will not wear/use yourself.

2. Items must be placed in boxes or strong bags. Please do not send items in plastic bags because they can break easily.

We encourage everyone to include a small packet of washing powder with their donation. (We sometimes wash clothes to remove dust and signs of humidity, and to make sure that each person receives something that is in proper hygienic condition).

If you’d like to contact Caritas, you can reach them at caritas@caritas-tr.org.
