The Bad Plus bring their boundary-pushing blend of contemporary jazz, rock, and improvisation to Fiba Salon İKSV on Saturday 12 September, marking part of the group’s 2026 farewell tour. The performance comes during the band’s final year, making it a particularly significant appearance for an ensemble that has spent more than two decades challenging the conventions of instrumental jazz while maintaining a strong connection to the energy and attitude of rock music. Formed in 2000 by bassist Reid Anderson, drummer Dave King, and pianist Ethan Iverson, The Bad Plus quickly established a distinctive identity by treating jazz standards, indie rock, pop, and original compositions with the same irreverent curiosity. Their 2003 album These Are the Vistas brought wider attention, while subsequent releases including Give and Suspicious Activity? helped establish the trio as an unusually visible presence beyond the traditional jazz circuit. Their music combined intricate rhythmic structures and sophisticated improvisation with a directness that appealed equally to jazz listeners and audiences coming from rock and alternative music.
The group’s lineup and sound have evolved considerably over the years. After Iverson’s departure in 2017, pianist Orrin Evans joined for a series of recordings, including 2019’s Activate Infinity. In 2021, Anderson and King chose a more radical reset, replacing the piano with a quartet featuring guitarist Ben Monder and saxophonist and clarinetist Chris Speed. The resulting 2022 self-titled album shifted the band toward a broader, more textural sound, moving between avant-garde intensity, psychedelic passages, and spacious improvisation without abandoning its collective approach.
Their most recent studio album, Complex Emotions, was released in 2024 and continued this quartet format, with compositions contributed by all four members. In January 2026, The Bad Plus announced that the year would be their final chapter, closing a 26-year run that has included numerous lineup changes but a consistent commitment to experimentation and collective musicianship. Their September performance therefore offers a chance to hear the group during its final touring cycle, bringing a long and unusually fluid chapter in modern jazz to its conclusion.
