Sat 1: İpek Dinç Yüce Quintet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

İpek Dinç who is an undergraduate of İstanbul University, Faculty of Chemistry, started her musical career in 2005 when she met İlham Gencer. She was a finalist at the 2006 Nardis Young Jazz Singer of the Year Competition and participated in the İstanbul Jazz Festival Young Jazz Singer competition. She gave a concert in the Festival. Her success at 2009 Nardis Singing Competition took her to the Nomme Jazz Festival Competition in Estonia where she won the 3rd prize. She participated in numerous festivals. Dinç has been invited to attend the “Young jazz Voices” event in Latvia in 2009. Her repertoire for this night will consist of R&B as well as jazz standards.

Mon 3: Kaan Bıyıkoğlu Trio (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Kaan Bıyıkoğlu got interested in jazz while studying at the Ankara Science High School, and during his studies at Middle East Technical University he studied piano with Prof. Semra Kartal besides sharing the stages with eminent Turkish jazz musicians such as Tuna Ötenel, Yıldız İbrahimova, Yahya Dai and Kürşat And. Later on he did his master’s on classical piano performance at Başkent University Ankara State Conservatory where he studied with Mehmet Okonşar. Kaan moved to the Netherlands in 2006 to further his jazz education, and he studied jazz piano and harmony with Kris Goessens and Rob van Bavel, and composition and orchestration with Ilja Reijngoud at the Rotterdam Conservatorium. He attended to the master classes and workshops given by Barry Harris, Charlie Haden, Peter Erskine, Jason Moran, Miguel Zenon, Antonio Farao, Baptiste Trotignon, Luis Perdomo, Dado Morani, and Misha Alperin. He participated in numerous festivals, concerts, radio and television broadcasts, and album recordings in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. After returning back to Turkey in 2013 and briefly teaching piano and harmony at the Jazz Department of Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory, Kaan Bıyıkoğlu is currently continuing his PhD studies at ITU MIAM – Center for Advanced Studies in Music.

Tue 4: Monk Quartet (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Coming from different backgrounds, the three musicians meet for the very first time in this formation to share their love of Monk’s great music. Cağdaş Oruç (sax) met Andreas Metzler (bass) through playing with Okay Temiz Oriental Wind and through the vibe-player Tony Miceli, Can Tutuğ (vibes) and Andreas came into contact. As so often music connects and allies people, it’s a world-language, especially Jazz, which everybody understands.

Wed 5: Önder Focan Trio (21:30-00:30)

Virtuoso Önder Focan keeps creating new project with young musicians, and this is one of them. They will perform beloved standards.

Thu 6: Önder Focan & Şallıel Bros. “Funkbook” (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

We will listen to a new project by Önder Focan and Şallıel Brothers. Şallıel Brothers are the founders of What da Funk Project, in which they interpret classics from funk, jazz and soul music with their own arrangements. The saxophonist brothers will interpret Önder Focan’s compositions in their own funky style tonight.

Fri 7: Su İdil Quintet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Su İdil was born in Ankara 1994. She is graduated with high honor degree from Baskent University, Psychology Department. Since the first years of secondary school she is interested in jazz. In the beginning of her adventure she studied with Durul Gence for a year, who is a very famous drummer and jazz historian in Turkey. In 2010 she won a scholarship from Nardis Jazz Vocal Competition for a workshop in Poland, Pulawy. She attented to Sibel Kose vocal class and worked with Dante Luciani and Bogdan Holownia, Janusz Szprot. In 2012 she was among the finalists of Akbank Jammz Competition. In March 2015 she won the first prize and 4 other special prizes by an unanimous decision of the jury from Nardis Jazz Vocal Competition. She regularly has gigs and sings a variety of jazz, R&B, funk and soul.

Sat 8: Dolunay Obruk Quintet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Dolunay Obruk, who has been a jazz musician since 2004, is also a professional graphic designer, as well as a lyricist, composer and singer, and has taken part in many projects with eminent jazz musicians such as Neşet Ruacan, Emin Fındıkoğlu, Imer Demirer, and Cem Tuncer and shared the same stage with them. She has sung jazz music in her own unique way in performances organized both in Turkey and abroad, sometimes adding popular folkloric songs to jazz, and recently has been working on projects where she visualizes her music by combining her expertise in graphic design and vocals. Dolunay Obruk’s musical stories drawn by herself are displayed throughout her concerts, carrying the audience to a different world.

Mon 10: Tolga Bedir Trio (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Tolga Bedir graduated from Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory Violin Department and Composition and Orchestral Conducting. Later on he studied at Berklee College of Music, with a scholarship on classic music and jazz. There, he studied with Ray Santisi on Jazz Composition on piano whilst taking drum lessons as a secondary instrument. Apart from his academic studies, he worked with violin virtuoso Özcan Ulucan world renowned pianist Aydın Esen for many years. He also accompanied Esen on drums in the later years.

He performed with Borusan Chamber Orchestra, CRR Symphony Orchestra and Mediterranean Youth Orchestra (Marseille/France) as a violin player. He performed with many jazz and pop artists in both live and studio performances as a keyboard player, drummer and bass player. He composes and arranges in his studio since 2012, working on projects for artists from various genres. The trio will be performing classic and modern jazz standards along with Bedir’s originals.

Tue 11: Tango Jazz Quartet (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

The band mixes the melodic and rhythmic patterns of Tango with the harmonies and improvisation of Jazz. This results in a new concept of our music. This new approach to Tango and Jazz has received an enthusiastic reaction both in Argentina as well as internationally. Over the last few years, the band has managed to establish istself on the international music scene. As a consequence of TJQ strengthening in the European Jazz Scene, the seventh tour they will make in August and September has contracts in Switzerland, England, Wales, France, Belgium, Spain, Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, including six performances in Jazz Festivals and 15 in Jazz Clubs.

Wed 12: Nihan Kır Quartet (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Born in 1995, Nihan Kır attended İstanbul University State Conservatory as a part time piano student.  She graduated from Galatasaray High school in 2014 and took the second place at Nardis’ Jazz Vocals Competition the next year. She is currently a law student at Galatasaray University.

Thu 13: Cazzip Project (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Erhan Ertetik and Ertuğrul Biber first came together at Modern Music Academy in 2012, later joined by Aslı Özer. What brought them together was the desire to play what they want, perform what they feel. This then led to writing their own material. Pianist Aslı Özer also works at a global company as a sales manager. Bass player Erhan Ertetik performs with Kıraç and Gülşen, drummer Ertuğrul Biber performs with Bora Öztoprak and Emre Kınay. Cazzip Project was influenced by artists and bands like Hiromi Uehara, Avishai Cohen, Esbjorn Svensson Trio, Chick Corea Elektric Band and Gogo Penguin. The band won 21st Istanbul Jazz Festival Youth Jazz Contest, winning the chance to perform at the festival. Cazzip Project regularly performs at Istanbul’s leading venues.

Fri 14: Sibel Demir Band (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Born in İstanbul in 1991, Sibel Demir started studying music in 2005 at the Istanbul Universty Stated Conservatory in the chorust program in 2009.She continued her BA in their opera program.She has been active in the Rezonans, Borusan and Sirene choruses.During her studies at the Conservatory she also became interested in Jazz. Sibel has been attending the Sibel Köse jazz vocalist workshop since 2014 and in 2016 won a place in the 46th annuel Pulawy jazz workshop in  Poland in the Nardis Jazz Club young vocalist competition. Sibel continues to study and perform both jazz and classical music.

Sat 15: Deniz Taşar Quartet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Deniz Taşar has won Nardis Young Jazz Vocal Competition, İstanbul Culture and Arts Foundation Young Jazz Competition and Akbank JAmZZ Competition “Best Interpretation Award” in 2013 and since then has been performing in prestigious jazz venues and festivals, collaborating with big names in her performances. She released her well received debut album “Uykuda Bir Bulut” in 2016. She has a bass-vocal duo project “Songs From A Breeze” with an album “Chapter One”, also released in 2016. Tonight the band will be performing a selection of neo soul and jazz songs as well as Taşar’s original compositions.

Mon 17: Can Çankaya Trio (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Pianist Can Çankaya did his Master’s degree in 2007 in New York upon receiving a scholarship.He studied with legendary jazz pianists like Mulgrew Miller, James Weidman and Harold Mabern. He performed at ‘Manhattan Center’, ‘Joe’s Pub’, ‘National Arts Club’ and ’92Y’ in New York, Brooklyn Dumbo Art Festival and Central Park Summer Stage Festival. Being one of Turkey’s most important pianists, he was one of the four founding members of ‘Kangroove’. He played with bands like ‘Acid Trippin’, ‘Detant’, ‘Ricky Ford’s Istanbul Collective Big Band’, ‘Kangroove’, ‘Funkbones’ and ‘Ece Göksu Quintet’. He performed at ‘Istanbul International Jazz Festival’, ‘Rock’n Coke’, ‘Improvisation Festival’, International Electronica Music Festival’ with his own trio. He recorded an album in France in 1998 with the support of French Cultural Center. The trio will be performing originals and standards.

Tue 18: Onur Ataman Ensemble (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Onur Ataman is a professional jazz guitarist, educater and a composer, a graduate of the Royal Conservatory, the Netherlands. His guitar playing technique and his compositions have been influenced by various genres of music. Ataman’s  style is a colourful and unique blend of good old jazz traditions and his personal vision created with a modern approach. Onur Ataman continues to work on his new debut album. In the same time Ataman gives seminars, workshopes and lessons to a large groups of education centers and business people all around the europe and Turkey under the name of ”Jazz & Innovations”. He gave till now two Tedx speach and performances about his way of thinking and education system.

Wed 19: Anıl Şallıel Band (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Anıl Şallıel’s music journey started at the age of eight with the support of his father Mümin Şallıel. He started performing professionally at 14 and was a part of Orhan Osman’s ‘Turkophony’ project alongside Dave Weckl. He performed with bands and artists including Kavela, Effective Band, Onur Mete Band, Ercüment Vural Band, İstanbul Superband and Aşkın Arsunan Jazzino Band. He also performed and recorded with pop music artists like Göksel, Volkan Konak, Teoman, Yalın, Manga, Sıla and Mehmet Erdem. In 2010 after taking the entrance exam of London College of Music in Turkey he started studying and graduated with honours. In 2012 and 2013 with What da Funk Project he performed with world renowned vocalists Kellie Sae and Omar. He was also a guest musician in the Nicola Conte concert which was an event for the International Jazz Day. Anıl also performs for jingles and film scores both as a saxophone and a flute player.

Thu 20: Gustav Lundgren Trio (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Stockholm 1980, started to play guitar at age 12. He studied music in Stockholm, Bollnäs and Svalöv between 1996-2000. Gustav started to play at clubs around Stockholm at age 16 and made his first tour to Spain with his own trio at age 19. Between 2000-2012 Gustav toured Japan, USA, Argentina, Indonesia, England, Brazil, France, Syria, Turkey, Scotland, Slovakia, Spain, Italy, Algeria,

Latvia, Switzerland, Austria, Moldova, Ukraine, Transnistria, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway & Finland with different jazz groups. He has recorded over 60 albums as a side man and 20 as a leader. Gustav Lundgren has been working with names like: Jimmy Rosenberg, Jorge Rossy, Doug Weiss, Antoine Boyer, Lelo Nika, Dorado Schmitt, The Swedish House Mafia, Kleerup, September, AronChupa & Anne Sofie von Otter.

Gustav Lundgren is well known within Jazz, Gypsy Swing and House. He has also composed & recorded music for TV commercials (MTV, TV4) and produced albums for artists like Jelena Jakubovitch, Lili Araujo, Luiz Murá, Stockholm Swing All Stars, Celia Mur and Hot Club de Suede. Gustav has performed in both TV and Radio in many different countries including the USA.
In 2004 Gustav was honored with his own signature guitar model from AJL-Guitars. In 2005 he received the Louis Armstrong Scholarship. In 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014 & 2016 he was honored with grants from The Swedish Arts Grants Committee. In 2015 he received the Albin Hagström Scholarship and the Second Line Jazzband Scholarship.

Fri 21: Achille Succi Band (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Achille Succi, has recently been singled out as “one of the European musicians to keep an eye on in the next ten years” (Bill Schoemaker, Giornale della musica, January 2010), while journalist Mario Gamba defines him as a “genius of Italian jazz” (Alias, March 20th, 2010).
Born in Modena, Italy, in 1971, he began self-taught and later won several scholarships that gave him the chance to study in some of the most important schools and workshops in the world (Berklee, D.Liebman masterclasses, Kopenhagen Rhythmic conservatory, Siena Jazz).

Among the many artists he has collaborated with are Uri Caine, Ralph Alessi, Sylvie Curvoisier, Steve Swell, Louis Sclavis, Ernst Reijseger, Pierre Dørge and Franco D’Andrea; he also took part in the recording of many CDs and performed all over the world.

As leader Achille Succi has recorded two CDs: “Shiva’s dance” and “Terra”, and a duo session with Bass player Salvatore Maiore: “Pequenas flores do inferno”.

Together with Fabrizio Puglisi and Alberto Capelli he founded the “Atman” group, with two CDs released.With pianist Christopher Culpo he just released “Fresh Frozen”, for the “El Gallo Rojo” record label, featuring tuba player Oren Marshall.

Achille Succi teaches music ensemble in Nonantola (Modena) and holds improvisation workshops and masterclasses in several Italian cities. Since 2001 he has been a faculty member of famous summer workshop Siena Jazz, and recently taught at the In.Jam masterclasses; since 2006 he also teaches clarinet and improvisation techniques at the Ferrara, Bologna and Brescia Conservatory.

Sat 22: Ece Göksu Quartet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Ece Göksu comes from a family of musicians and was born in Ankara. As a child she sang with the children’s choir of the Ankara State Opera and Ballet where she went on to study the piano. She participated in masterclasses run by Hüseyin Sermet and Ayşegül Sarıca. She started to get interested in Jazz at university. When her family moved to Istanbul in 2000 she transferred to the Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory from where she studied with Prof. Seher Tanrıyar before graduating. In 2007 while singing in various Istanbul venues and taking part in different festivals she won the Fulbright scholarship and then a scholarship from the William Paterson University which allowed her to follow a master’s programme in NJ/USA. Her masters thesis was based on Billie Holiday’s compositions and this was eventually published as a book by UMI-Proquest. Ece Goksu’s repertoire tonight will include her album Masal and Slow Hot Wind.

Mon 24: Sanat Deliorman & the Talking Guitars  (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Sanat Deliorman, who took up singing jazz in 2003, when a translation student at Boğaziçi University, in school’s a cappella jazz choir, has been holding gigs at jazz clubs of Istanbul, Ankara and Bodrum since 2010, with her beloved “jazz bros”. Sanat will be back at Nardis, her favourite venue, with two new generation poets of Turkish jazz guitar, Bora Çeliker and Eylül Biçer. In this project, called “Talking Guitars”, the night will be colored with standarts, Monk, unknown Brazilian bossa-novas, Italian movie musics and even with British pop.

Tue 25: Yinon Muallem “TaKiDum” (21:30-00:30) // 50 TL

TaKiDum is a colorful and energetic rhythm group created by 3 musician friends, diving into the search of sound of rhythm, exploring melodies and rhythmic patterns. Playing exciting improvisations, trio takes listeners to a journey of feel alive, touching souls and activating all senses. The music created enables the listeners being part of the music immediately and start contributing spontaneously in live performances.

The synergy created within the trio is definitely bigger than its parts. Multi percussionist and oudist Yinon Muallem is surfing in between percussion and oud while playing the pieces, mostly his own compositions. Hakan Gürbüz is creating the music with the beautiful timbre of his bass and his unique vocal while İsmail Altunbaş, a darbuka virtuoso is shining with his outstanding percussion abilities. For this project, Yinon wrote new original pieces and Ismail contributed with 2 of his own compositions.

Sep 26: Los Amigos De Herman Feat Duygu Demir (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

“From Traditional To Contemporary Latin American Songs”
Every geography has a natural rhythm which is peculiar to that place, an experience from life which people of that land get from life, culture, songs, dances, rhythms, musics, which come into existence from that experience. The world needs all kinds of perspectıves.

The thousands of years of wisdom and experience of American Indians, the polyphonic harmony of Europa and multi rhythm of the African Music, the paculiar, extraordinary and complicated rhythm of Latin American songs; keep reminding us the brotherhood of the people of the world, similar or common humane feelings and thougts in our differences,(praise for natural beauties, affection, love, longing, gallantry, critique, grief, complaining, thoughts about life, stories about social events) in the plainest and most comprehensible way.

Along with dance and love songs, the songs of suffer days, hopeful tomorrows, and peace, which are the other side of Latin America, will be played and sung. In the night where will be warmed up with rhythms like samba, salsa, rhumba, cha cha cha, milonga, habanera, bolero, waltz etc., and where the songs of many Latin American singers, like Consuelo Velazquez, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Osvaldo Farres, Alvaro Carrillo, Sergio Mendes, Miguel Matamoros, Maria Teresa Vera, Hugo Blanco, Rafael Hernandez, Manuel Jimenez Fernandez, Armando Manzanero, Violeta Parra,will also be performed and jammed.

Thu 27: Defne Şahin Band Unravel (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Unravel is a musical journey that leads around half the globe and reflects Defne Şahin’s vast musical horizon. She was born in Berlin and spent a while in Barcelona and in the Brazilian Salvador da Bahia. From 2011 to mid-2012, the singer, composer and songwriter commuted between Berlin and Istanbul before moving to New York. Thanks to scholarships from the DAAD and the Heinrich Böll Foundation, she studied for two years at the Manhattan School of Music, including Theo Bleckmann and Gretchen Parlato.

Defne Şahin has appeared in jazz clubs and concert halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York and jazz festivals in South Africa, Holland and Turkey, and is a fixture in the “international jazz scene”. -Tagesspiegel

While she set to music for her debut album Yaşamak Turkish lyrics of Nâzım Hikmet, Defne Şahin sings on Unravel for the first time their own English lyrics and interprets not only their own compositions, but also by Guillermo Klein, who produced the album.

“Unravel (unraveling, unfolding) stands for discoveries that are unpredictable or predictable,” explains Defne Şahin, “like most really good encounters during a journey.” This journey leads from oriental melodies and Brazilian lightness to pure songs and free passages to complex harmonies and rhythms. She is currently the Artist in Residence at the Cultural Academy of Tarabya.

Fri 28: Bebop Project (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Bebop came around during the late 40’s and is considered the beginning of modern jazz. The band will be performing tunes of Bebop giants Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Bud Powell, Thelenious Monk and also their originals. The band is Şenova Ülker on trumpet, Engin Recepoğulları on tenor saxophone, Önder Focan on guitar, Ozan Musluoğlu on bass and Ayhan Öztoplu on drums.

Sat 29: Selen Beytekin Project (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Selen Baytekin who was born in 1987 started her classical piano studies at the age of eight as a provate pupil of Ergican Saydam. She joined the European Voices choir during her highschool studies and then went on to form her own A capella group. Selen’s path crossed Ilham Gencer at a tango evening in 2007 and with his encouragement, she started her own solo piano & singing programme at Q Jazz Bar. She then performed with  Aşkın Arsunan’s The Blue Print Project Band. Selen grauated as a civil engineer from Istanbul technical University in 2008 and then obtained a masters degree in Architecture from the same University. While pursuing her professional career, Selen who is passionate about music continues to perform the Jazz, Soul, Funk & R&B scenes.

Selcen is an avid globetrotter and Istanbul based editor. She has a BA in American Literature, an MA in Cultural Management and likes reading about travel, food, arts & cultures. Always on the look-out for her next adventure, Selcen’s dream is to keep exploring the world, pen, paper and camera in hand.
