Exhibition: “Cunda – Ayvalık” @ Galeri Selvin

“Cunda - Ayvalık”

Gülseren Kayalı got through the painting department of Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1977, completing the Devrim Erbil Painting Workshop and Sabri Berkel Gravure Workshop. In 1972, she graduated from the School of Applied Industrial Arts, department of Textile and Weaving. She won the Inter Continental , The Marmara Taksim , Gravure award in 1975 and in 1979; she won her first Golden Palette award and in 1980 she won her second. In 1981, she also shared the jury’s special award in the category of Turkish group in the exhibition of UFACSI XIII – International Women Artists Society that took place in Clermont-Ferrand, France.

In her Cunda-Ayvalık themed paintings, Gülseren Kayalı uses acrylic paint on canvas and mixed techniques. She includes the typecastings of people and locations that is imprinted in her own inner world such as Ayvalık Kanelo Cafe, Cunda Taşkahve, Tavuk Island, mai chairs, hawkers, houses of Cunda-Ayvalık.

Boats, umbrellas, fishermen, cats, dogs, delicious Ayvalık food, flower from the cone, thyme, smell of olives, old tales of the island, fishing nets, lanterns,
its crazy wind, moonlight, fish, owls, shorebirds and seagulls… All of them come into existence over again in many different compositions from each other and  tell their untold, secret stories.

Gülseren Kayalı’s painting exhibition named “Cunda – Ayvalık” can be seen in the Gallery Selvin between the dates September 20th – October 8th.
