Hiring: Senior Science Editor @ Interesting Engineering

Interesting Engineering has an immediate opening for a senior science editor. We’re looking for a journalist who is eager to report on some of the biggest news stories of the day. The differentiator for us is that we write for someone who has a passion for science, taking the complex and explaining to a broader audience, and helping to reveal the fascinating advancements taking pace in science and technology.

From the technology and machinery used on the ground in global conflict to the mind-expanding science conducted in the far reaches of space, the position offers the opportunity to critically think about and research the mechanisms of the day’s big stories.

The full-time position, based in our Istanbul office, reports to the editor-in-chief. You will be tasked with shaping the science section, crafting the editorial output, and working with writers to deliver our best stories yet.

The ideal candidate can reliably produce bright, immensely readable copy that makes even the most complex ideas feel accessible, memorable, and shareable. This person is a grammar enthusiast, is unflappable in the sometimes pressurized environment of writing about developing stories, and prides themselves on a curiosity that results in stories with depth and detail while preserving newsy brevity.

IE is dedicated to supporting its diverse and inclusive editorial staff. IE urges women, people of color, armed forces veterans, people with disabilities, and gender-nonconforming people to apply. IE does not discriminate based on sex, age, race, color, creed, national origin, religion, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation, affectional choice, or gender identity. We recognize a person’s unique experiences as points of strength and welcome them as journalists on our team, working in service of the mission to explore and report on engineering, in whatever form it takes.

Responsibilities:

  • Shape the overall direction of the science section, helping it move from strength to strength by working with a team of writers and freelancers.
  • Write daily news articles between 500 and 800 words.
  • Produce longer-form features with original reporting.
  • Help identify the biggest trends and upcoming stories that we should cover in the world of science.
  • Produce and edit error-free stories.

Requirements:

  • One to two years of news editing experience at an English language digital media outlet
  • Familiarity with a CMS.
  • A demonstrated interest in reporting on science.
  • Education and/or experience in science is a big plus.
  • A quick and reliable communicator.
  • An eagerness to learn and improve their craft in a supportive environment.

Those interested should reach out with a CV and relevant materials to careers@interestingengineering.com.
