Retrospective – Creative Backlash Conference (EU-Turkey Funded via Connect for Creativity)

EU-Turkey funded Connect for Creativity announces its first international conference Creative Backlash!

Connect for Creativity aims to form a network of creative hubs across Europe to foster creative exploration and collaboration that contributes to building a more cohesive, open and connected civil society. Connect for Creativity is an 18-month project led by the British Council, in partnership with three creative hubs – ATÖLYE in Turkey, Bios in Greece, Nova Iskra in Serbia and Abdullah Gül University in Kayseri. The project is co-funded by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey, through the Intercultural Dialogue program.

The project will provide a number of opportunities for students, academics, artists, creative professionals, policymakers and the general public across Europe to form international networks and collaborations, exchange knowledge and skills and participate in creative exploration on the pillars of empathy, engagement, and empowerment. Key activities will include research to provide baseline information on the role of creative hubs and communities in promoting intercultural dialogue, three networking conferences in Belgrade, Athens and Kayseri, art and technology residency with an exhibition output, as well as a study visit.

The kick-off event is presented by the creative hub ATÖLYE in Istanbul on 7 May 2019 and will feature a keynote titled The Creative Industries Opportunity: Mobilising Culture, Hubs and Networks by Prof. Andy Pratt from City, University of London. The kick-off will be followed by the first in a series of three conferences.

Conference Open Call: Creative Backslash
From 12 to 14 June, Nova Iskra will present a three-day international conference under the title Creative Backslash: from precarious individuals to resilient organizations, at the Cultural Center of Belgrade and Fabrika event space. The conference will bring together distinguished lecturers, artists, creative entrepreneurs, hub representatives, students, academics and policymakers from across Europe, Turkey, the UK, and the Balkans. It will feature inspiring keynote lectures, presentations, panel discussions, and workshops, engaging the participants in important dialogues about the future of creative professions, as well as the notions and challenges of precarious work, co-creation and resilience.

The conference will also touch upon some of the emerging issues, such as the relationship of creative work and mental health, gig economy, and organization design and resilience, spread across three thematic modules: alone (individual), together (collaboration) and united (organization). The speakers will be representing well-known academic institutions and creative organizations from the UK, Slovenia, Serbia, Turkey, Greece, Portugal, and other countries. The full program will be announced on 20 May.

The conference participation is free of charge and is open to all international participants. A number of participants coming from outside of Serbia will be eligible for support, which will be covering their travel and accommodation expenses. Artists, researchers, creative entrepreneurs and hub representatives, academics or stakeholder representatives from across Europe are welcome to apply via the project website, by 20 May Sunday till 23:59.

An open call for art and technology residencies will be announced at the Belgrade conference and 12 selected artists from Greece, Turkey, Serbia, and the UK will have a chance to take part in a six-week long residency in Belgrade, Athens and Istanbul later in the year. The resulting works will be presented through local exhibitions, as well as a final exhibition that will be showcased in the UK in 2020.
