Maçka Art Gallery is meeting with art lovers once again with its fourth exhibition in its second period “Memento Mori”.

Ali Cabbar, Carmen Lozar, Dolce Paganne (Ceren Aksungur), Esra Carus, Fatih Kızılcan, Fırat Neziroğlu, Gönül Nuhoğlu, Hakan Gündüz, Ömür Tokgöz, Rüçhan Şahinoğlu, Serhat Kiraz, Server Demirtaş, Sevgi Karay, Şükran Moral ve Yiğit Aral come together around the concept of death.

The concept of “Memento Mori”, which dates back to ancient times, is a Latin phrase translated as “Remember that you are mortal” or “Remember that you must die”.

This concept, which became widespread with the Vanitas movement in the 16th and 17th centuries, has continued to be interpreted by artists who have shaped the history of art until today.
“Memento Mori”, the first group exhibition of Maçka Art Gallery in 2022, covers many disciplines such as ceramics, sculpture, painting, textile, and glass. Artists examine the concept of death and create new discourses around life, death, and art.

In the catalog article written by Fırat Arapoğlu, a member of the AICA TR International Association of Art Critics, the concept of “Memento Mori” is interpreted as follows:

“Death can come through war, a natural disaster, epidemic/pandemic, or time of death, and it is inevitable. So, how is “mortality” as a very old and universal phenomenon represented and being represented in art? Or, in other words, how did human’s temporary nature in the world turn into an aesthetic expression? Dealing with the phenomenon of death with an alienation, in other words, with cold blood humanity has started to think about the reality of mortality and the value of time. Because only in this way can the phenomenon of death consciously get rid of only an ars moriendi (art of death) description and turn into a representation reminiscent of vitality called memento mori (remember death). There are two truths before us: First, tempus fugit (time flies)! This expression of Virgil refers to the moment, moments, and time that we cannot get back, and time should not be wasted. Second, virtus junxit mors non separabit! (what virtue unites, death cannot separate), that is, what remains behind the individual in this time travel will be virtues rather than material objects”.

The “Memento Mori” exhibition will be opened on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at 17:00, could be visited until Saturday, April 9, 2022, at 19:00.
