Retrospective – Expat Spotlight: Cultural Heritage

A collaboration of ATÖLYE and Yabangee – we proudly continue with an exciting season of Expat Spotlight – a monthly series showcasing the freshest, most inspiring contributions being made by Istanbul’s diverse international community to the city’s cultural, sporting, humanitarian, and business spheres. An opportunity to share moving stories, reflect on personal experiences and participate in a resourceful dialogue, we invite foreigners and locals alike to join and embolden others.

Taking place in English, our latest online edition focuses in on the theme of “cultural heritage” on Wednesday 27 May. The event starts at 19:00.

Master of Ceremonies:

Jennifer Hattam is a freelance journalist from San Francisco who has been living in Istanbul since 2008. She writes about environmental, social, and urban issues, as well as art, culture, food, and travel for publications including CityLab, Culinary Backstreets, Deutsche Welle, Discover, Hyperallergic, Lonely Planet, and The Washington Post.

Guest speakers:

Ioannis Papachristou holds a PhD in Ancient Philosophy from Humboldt University (Berlin) and is currently member of the research project ‘A Sourcebook of Byzantine Philosophy’ at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. His research interests in history focus on the culture, history, genealogy, and maritime history of the southern Marmara islands, from where he hails, and the Cyzicus peninsula. He edited the historiographical treatise Anagraphē tēs Kyzikou [A Description of Cyzicus] of 1825 that was awarded by Hestia of Nea Smyrne (Greece) and the book The Marble Island: Travels in Marmara Island (2019). He is based in Istanbul since 2018 and collaborates with the Sakkoulidis Collection that focuses on the culture of Istanbul’s and Asia Minor’s Rums at the library of Sismanoglio Megaro of the Consulate General of Greece in Istanbul. He participates in the project ‘The Southern Islands of Marmara: Documentation and Risk Assessment of Architectural Heritage’ of the Association for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (Kültürel Mirası Koruma Derneği).

Dr. Alessandra Ricci, Professor, Late Antique and Byzantine Art and Archaeology Faculty, Koç University

Diana Miznazi is an architect and a conservator from Aleppo, Syria. She has been living and working in Istanbul since 2016 at the German Archaeological Institute as the coordinator of the Stewards of Cultural Heritage project (SoCH). SoCH was conceived to help safeguard Syrian cultural heritage through capacity building of Syrian heritage specialists who are residing in Turkey. It has been awarded one of the Grand Prix of the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards 2019 in the category: Education, Training and Awareness-Raising.
