Founded by producer and vocalist Matt Stephenson, Machine Girl first emerged in the mid-2010s through self-released recordings that drew equally from jungle, hardcore techno, industrial music and punk. Rather than settling within a single genre, the project has continually embraced stylistic instability, with releases such as WLFGRL, …Because I’m Young Arrogant and Hate Everything You Stand For and MG Ultra pushing electronic music toward increasingly abrasive and unpredictable territory. Their work frequently incorporates elements of video game culture, internet aesthetics and horror imagery, reflecting a distinctly digital artistic identity.
Machine Girl’s reputation has grown largely through its live performances, where electronic production is fused with the physical intensity of a punk concert. Equal parts DJ set, live band and performance art, the project’s shows are characterised by relentless tempo changes, distortion and improvisational energy, attracting audiences from across the worlds of experimental electronics, hardcore and alternative music. This approach has led to appearances at major international festivals, including Primavera Sound, while maintaining strong ties to independent music communities.
Resisting easy categorisation, Machine Girl occupies a space where club music, noise experimentation and punk ethos coexist.
