July Performances @ Nardis Jazz Club

Mon 2: Önder Focan Trio (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Virtuoso Önder Focan keeps creating new project with young musicians, and this is one of them. They will perform beloved standards.

Tue 3: Volkan Topakoğlu Band (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Double bass player Volkan Topakoğlu was born in İstanbul, Kadıköy in 1986. He was brought up in a family of musicians and this led him to have a music education at a very early age. He studied cello and piano at the İstanbul Anadolu Fine Arts High School and during these years he got interested in jazz. He went on to studying at the Yıldız Technical University’s Jazz Programme and had the chance to work with bass player Kamil Erdem. After graduation he took lessons from Jacek Niedziela and Bronek Suchanek in Poland. Along with many album recordings he also played on TV and radio shows and TRT Jazz Orchestra. Tonight the band will be performing both his originals and also standards.

Wed 4: Nihan Kır Quartet (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Born in 1995, Nihan Kır attended İstanbul University State Conservatory as a part time piano student.  She graduated from Galatasaray High school in 2014 and took the second place at Nardis’ Jazz Vocals Competition the next year. She is currently a law student at Galatasaray University.

Thu 5: Ceren Temel Quintet (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Ceren Temel began studying piano and violin at the Fine Arts Anatolian High School in Kayseri. She did her undergraduate studies at Gazi University’s Department of Music Education in Ankara between 2008-2012 and continued with her violin and piano studies. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Gazi University she began her masters program at the same school and she graduated in 2016.

Since high school Ceren has sung as a soprano in several choirs and has been a vocalist for several pop, blues and hard rock bands. Because of her deep love and interest in jazz she began studying jazz performance at Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory. Since September 2014 she has been studying vocal jazz performance and improvisation with Randy Esen and also worked on general vocal tecnique with Yıldız İbrahimova. Ceren took several lessons from award winning jazz vocalist Meltem Ege who is doing her doctoral degree in the USA.

In 2015, she performed in a concert with the Turkay Orchestra at Gazi University. In 2016 she joined the Istanbul Jazz Festival Youth Jazz Contest with her band was chosen to play at the festivals outdoor park concert. In September 2016 she attended legendary pianist Barry Harris’s jazz workshop in Rome. In March 2017 Ceren won the first prize at the 13th Nardis Youth Jazz Vocal Contest in Istanbul and attended and represented Turkey at the Riga Jazz Stage Contest in Latvia in April 2017. She continues studying jazz in Ankara and performing concerts in both Ankara and Istanbul. Tonight, the band will be performing jazz standards with different arrangements.

Fri 6: Flapper Swing (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Flapper Swing is a quintet following footsteps of famous french jazz artist Django Reinhardt and New Orleans’s expatriate Sidney Bechet. These five musicians were brought together by their passion for taunting acoustic sounds of gypsy swing . Flapper Swing’s music is a sweet blend of manouche guitars, wild soprano saxophone, sensitive silklike vocal, supported by deep woody hum of double bass. In their performances Flapper Swing is striving to bring the audience an atmosphere of roaring twenties and ballroom parties, the times when jazz was still fun.

Sat 7: Sibel Köse Quintet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Sibel Köse was born in Ankara where she attended the TED Ankara College followed by the Architecture Faculty of the METU graduating as an architect. Her early interest in jazz coincides with her university studies. She attended numerous seminars in Poland. Ms. Köse performs in concerts, radio and TV productions and local & international jazz festivals since 1987. She has been the winner of the International Jazz Vocalists Competition held in Zamosc, Poland. She performed alongside Dee Dee Bridgewater, Raul Midon and Stacey Kent at the “Nina Simone Tribute” concert. She has an album published in Poland. Tonight Ms. Köse and her band hope to give you an enjoyable evening with their fresh interpretation of standards.

Mon 9: Murat Arkan “Micheal Franks Project” (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Guitarist and singer Murat Arkan was born in Ankara. Studied Industrial Design in the Faculty of Architecture in Middle East Technical University. While performing as a professional musician, studied music in several universities such as; Bilkent University Jazz Department, Berklee College of Music – Umbria Jazz Clinics (Italy) and Bilgi University Jazz Department. In this concert, you will also hear him singing in the style of Michael Franks.

Michael Franks (b. 1944) is a jazz singer and songwriter from California. Recorded several albums as one of the pioneers of smooth jazz and was popular especially in late 1970’s and 1980’s. At this concert, you can listen many of his songs including ‘Antonio’s Song’, ‘Baseball’ and others by the participation of guest vocalists as well. Smooth Jazz fans will enjoy this concert.

Tue 10: Anıl Şallıel Band feat. Duygu Soylu (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Anıl Şallıel’s music journey started at the age of eight with the support of his father Mümin Şallıel. He started performing professionally at 14 and was a part of Orhan Osman’s ‘Turkophony’ project alongside Dave Weckl. He performed with bands and artists including Kavela, Effective Band, Onur Mete Band, Ercüment Vural Band, İstanbul Superband and Aşkın Arsunan Jazzino Band. He also performed and recorded with pop music artists like Göksel, Volkan Konak, Teoman, Yalın, Manga, Sıla and Mehmet Erdem. In 2010 after taking the entrance exam of London College of Music in Turkey he started studying and graduated with honours. In 2012 and 2013 with What da Funk Project he performed with world renowned vocalists Kellie Sae and Omar. He was also a guest musician in the Nicola Conte concert which was an event for the International Jazz Day. Anıl also performs for jingles and film scores both as a saxophone and a flute player.

Wed 11: Can Çankaya & Kağan Yıldız Duo “Timeless” (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Two of the great Turkish Jazz performers of our era, Can Çankaya and Kağan Yıldız will perform songs from their newly released album tonight. Concert at Nardis will be one of the first concerts of the Duo, who recorded their new album in April 2017. Can Çankaya on piano and Kağan Yıldız on bass will present their own compositions along with their highly fantastic interpretations of the jazz standards. This duo performance is a rare project in Turkish Jazz community.

Thu 12: Baturay Yarkın Quartet (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL 

Pianist will be on the stage playing his new composition with his new jazz quartet. The rich melodic and rhythmic sources of Turkish Classical Music and Baturay Yarkın’s compositions and arrangements are essential factors for the group which intends to be peculiar. The band, which pointed the importance of multicultural communication performing in 21. İstanbul Jazz Festival, The Netherlands, Croatia, Italy and U.S.A. continues to perform in Turkey and on abroad. The band completed its national tour in 15 universities, which happened in 12 different cities in 2017 with the support of Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Baturay Yarkın joined the jazz workshops given by Barry Harris, Greg Osby, Eric Alexander, New York Jazz Workshop and Pulawy Jazz Workshop in 2014-2015. He represented Codarts at the “Pop and Jazz Platform” organized by Association Européenne des Conservatoires on February, 2016. The first trio album Su, which consists of Baturay Yarkın’s compositions and guest international artists, One, which is the first album of Yarkın Duo and Tangueros de Estambul by TangEsta are available on music markets. The Colors of Anatolia will be available toward the end of the year.

Fri 13: Luis Ernesto Gomez & Latin Jazz Band (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Born from a Columbian dancer mother and a Cuban musician father, Luis Ernesto Gomez grew up in Paris. His father is one of the pioneers of salsa and Cuban music in France. Luis studied with Changuito and Tata Guines. Since 1986, he has been playing tumba in countless salsa and latin jazz bands. His stage career started at the age of 16, accompanying Mayra Valdes Irakere. He started performing with the band of Rembert Egues, the Cuban musician, at “Les Trois Mailletz” Jazz Club in Paris. He accompanied many famous musicians with his tumba at this venue where he became art director. In 1998, Luis and his wife, Gülseren Yıldırım Gomez, famous singer, percussionist (darbuka) and dancer (who was to be the Turkish participant in the 2005 Eurovision song contest), encouraged by their interest in world music and cultural exchange intruduced the first Salsa Turca group in Paris. Since 2005, Gülseren and Luis has been singing and playing with her own band in Turkey and different countries: Hungary, Poland, Colombia, France, England, İtaly, Russia, Spain, Emirates. Gülseren has already produced and sang for 11 CD albums (Vents d’Est; Gülseren; Turkish Groove; Kumbiya Turka). Gülseren and Luis formed in İstanbul their own and unique salsa big band: “Luis Ernesto Gomez & Latin Jazz Band”.

Sat 14: Ece Göksu Quartet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Ece Göksu comes from a family of musicians and was born in Ankara. As a child she sang with the children’s choir of the Ankara State Opera and Ballet where she went on to study the piano. She participated in masterclasses run by Hüseyin Sermet and Ayşegül Sarıca. She started to get interested in Jazz at university. When her family moved to Istanbul in 2000 she transferred to the Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory from where she studied with Prof. Seher Tanrıyar before graduating. In 2007 while singing in various Istanbul venues and taking part in different festivals she won the Fulbright scholarship and then a scholarship from the William Paterson University which allowed her to follow a master’s programme in NJ/USA. Her masters thesis was based on Billie Holiday’s compositions and this was eventually published as a book by UMI-Proquest. Ece Goksu’s repertoire tonight will include her album Masal and Slow Hot Wind.

Mon 16: Laturi (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Laturi was influenced by the Jazz Manouche music which was started by the legendary musicians Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli. They formed their repertoires from the jazz manouche pieces as well as classic jazz pieces.

Wed 18: Sanat Deliorman ve Caz Biraderleri (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Sanat Deliorman, who started singing jazz in 2003, when studying translation at Boğaziçi University, in school’s a cappella jazz choir, has won several awards and special mensions in a number of vocal jazz competitions and was invited to the International Istanbul Jazz Festival as a young talent in 2010. Known for her strong voice and deep sentimental interpretation, Deliorman, since 2012, has been holding gigs in jazz clubs of Istanbul, Ankara and Bodrum, with her jam session group called “Sanat Deliorman & Her Jazz Bros”. On the other hand, she is holding project concerts with Bora Çeliker and Eylül Biçer as Talking Guitars Trio, and with Janusz Szprot for the Turkish-Polish jazz project called “From Poland with Love”.

Also active as a festival programme annotator, dubbing artist and a graphic designer, Deliorman prepares and presents an on-air show called “World’s Jazz” every tuesday evening on Açık Radyo, occasionally promoting new albums of jazz musicians in her live talk shows, while penning concert reviews for jazzdergisi.com.

In Summer 2017, she participated the 2nd International New York Jazz Masters Workshop held in Wojanów, where she worked with masters like Aaron Goldberg, Greg Osby, Mike Moreno, Kendrick Scott and Matt Penman and got on stage at Vertigo Jazz Club in Wrocław during this workshop. Most recently, she is travelling to Balkan countries, such as Greece as a guest singer, meanwhile working on her debut album, to record her own Turkish jazz, tango and pop songs.

Thu 19: Cem Kaprol Quintet “Other Standards” (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Cem Kaprol started studying classical music at a very young age but shifted towards jazz during his high school years. He studied jazz and performance with pianist Ömür Gidel while he was still studying at university. He later studied at Mannes School of Music in New York. There, he worked with artists like Armen Donelian, Richie Beirach and Phil Markowitz. After returning to Turkey during the 90’s he performed with various bands in the Istanbul jazz scene. He studied with pianist Kent Mete in the 00’s. He concentrated on his original material in the recent years, and completed those pieces with the support of Burak Bedikyan. His project ”European and Other Standards” has a modern approach to music, whilst keeping the unique sounds of European jazz. Kaprol not only performs his own compositions, but also tunes by artists like Michel Petrucciani, Enrico Pieranunzi, Esbjorn Svensson, Bobo Stenson, Lars Jansson and many others. Lately, the artist has been in the studio to finish the recording of this project.

Fri 20: Elif & Paul Sanchez The Latin Project (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Elif Sanchez’s journey began at home in Istanbul. She graduated Istanbul University State Conservatory as a classical oboist with the honorary ‘outstanding success award’. During her studies at the conservatory, she was accepted to Bahcesehir Jazz School as a vocalist with scholarships and was awarded a diploma. She was accepted to Berklee College of Music on a generous scholarship and graduated in 2017. She had the opportunity to perform with incredible musicians and groups such as David Liebman, Terence Blanchard, Antonio Serrano, Tigran Hamasyan, Aynur Dogan, Guinga, Nobuo Uematsu and Dream Theater. She received the prestigious Bill Pierce award and Mediterranean Music Institute Award. Elif had a European and South American tour with her projects in 2016 sponsored by Berklee. In 2017, She was the co-producer and arranger for the Mediterranean Music Concert produced by Javier Limon featuring Aynur Dogan.

Paul Sanchez EN Paul Sanchez, Trumpet player from Ecuador began his musical career studying at the National Conservatory and the Brass Band. Paul started to study at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito at the age of 14. This gave him the opportunity to play with jazz musicians such as; Brad Goode, Jeff Galindo, Elizabeth Dotson, Greg Badolato, Rick Peckham and Antonio Hart. He got a full scholarship in the University of North Texas, where he took lessons from masters such as; Rodney Booth, Mike Steinel and Lynn Seton. Paul won first place as melodic instrument in the “Emisarios Del Jazz” competition and played at the Kennedy Center in D.C. In March 2011, he obtained the Presidential Scholarship from the prestigious Berklee College of Music. He had the opportunity to share the stage with musicians like Antonio Sanchez, Terrance Blanchard, Paquito D’ rivera, Luis Enrique and Alejandro Sanz, who he later performed with at the Latin Grammys.

Sat 21: İpek Dinç Yüce Quintet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Ipek Dinc who is an undergraduate of İstanbul University, Faculty of Chemistry, started her musical career in 2005 when she met İlham Gencer. She was a finalist at the 2006 Nardis Young Jazz Singer of the Year Competition and participated in the İstanbul Jazz Festival Young Jazz Singer competition. She gave a concert in the Festival. Her success at 2009 Nardis Singing Competition took her to the Nomme Jazz Festival Competition in Estonia where she won the 3rd prize. She participated in numerous festivals. Dinç has been invited to attend the “Young jazz Voices” event in Latvia in 2009. Her repertoire for this night will consist of R&B as well as jazz standards.

Mon 23: Burak Cihangirli Trio (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Burak Cihangirli started playing drums with the influence of his father. After working with his father for a while, he trained with Turgay Gülaydın for three years. In 2014, he got into Bahçeşehir University Jazz Certificate Program and had the chance to work with Ferit Odman and Cengiz Baysal. In 2015, he played at XJazz Festival. Today, he’s still performing in various jazz clubs in Turkey.

Tue 24: Manuş-u Ala (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Born in the capital Ankara, Gizay started her musical studies by singing in choirs. She also took classical guitar lessons in high school. While studying at Hacettepe University, she also took part in the Hacettepe University Conservatory Youth Choir. Upon her graduation in 2008, she moved to İstanbul and started studying jazz. She attended workshops by Sibel Köse and Elif Çağlar, studied jazz vocal with İldeniz Çetin and Çağıl Kaya, jazz piano with Haluk Dayıoğlu and harmony/piano with Ilgın Ayık. She continued working on commercial music, music for TV shows and live performances since then. She co-founded Stüdyo 6 with jazz guitarist Kaan Büyükdoğanay in late 2013. She currently continues her studies along with live performances.

Wed 25: Kaan Bıyıkoğlu Trio (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Kaan Bıyıkoğlu got interested with jazz while studying at the Ankara Science High School, and during his bachelor’s and master’s studies at Middle East Technical University he studied piano with Prof. Semra Kartal besides sharing the stages with eminent Turkish jazz musicians such as Tuna Ötenel, Yıldız İbrahimova, Yahya Dai and Kürşat And. He finished his master’s studies at the METU Informatics Institute with his thesis entitled “A Markov Model For Chorale Harmonization in the Style of J.S. Bach”. At the samre time he did his master’s on classical piano performance at Başkent University Ankara State Conservatory where he studied with Mehmet Okonşar. Kaan moved to the Netherlands in 2006 to further his jazz education, and he studied jazz piano and harmony with Kris Goessens and Rob van Bavel, and composition and orchestration with Ilja Reijngoud at the Rotterdam Conservatorium. He attended to the master classes and workshops given by Barry Harris, Charlie Haden, Peter Erskine, Jason Moran, Miguel Zenon, Antonio Farao, Baptiste Trotignon, Luis Perdomo, Dado Morani, and Misha Alperin. He participated in numerous festivals, concerts, radio and television broadcasts, and album recordings in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Kaan Bıyıkoğlu returned back to Turkey in 2013 and currently he is teaching piano and harmony at the Jazz Department of Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory.

Fri 27: Cazzip Project (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Erhan Ertetik and Ertuğrul Biber first came together at Modern Music Academy in 2012, later joined by Aslı Özer. What brought them together was the desire to play what they want, perform what they feel. This then led to writing their own material. Pianist Aslı Özer also works at a global company as a sales manager. Bass player Erhan Ertetik performs with Kıraç and Gülşen, drummer Ertuğrul Biber performs with Bora Öztoprak and Emre Kınay. Cazzip Project was influenced by artists and bands like Hiromi Uehara, Avishai Cohen, Esbjorn Svensson Trio, Chick Corea Elektric Band and Gogo Penguin. The band won 21st Istanbul Jazz Festival Youth Jazz Contest, winning the chance to perform at the festival. Cazzip Project regularly performs at Istanbul’s leading venues.

Sat 28: Esra Kayıkçı Band (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

She began studying music theory and guitar in 1999. She studied jazz vocal with Elif Çağlar, Randy Esen and Sibel Köse and attended workshops of important musicians such as Shelia Jordan and Mark Murphy. She reached to the semi-final in the competition named “Jamzz” which organized by Akbank in 2011. She took stage at Anadolu University 11. Amateur Jazz Musicians Festival in 2013. In 2016 &Bozgun Hatıra& her first/debut album consisting of her own compositions and lyrics written by herself together with Mehmet Karadağ, was published under the label of Kabak & Lin Records in which Ercüment Orkut undertook the arrangements and musical directorate.

In 2016, she took the stage as semi-finalist in one of the world’s most prestigious competitions, 50th Montreux Jazz Vocal Contest where Angelique Kidjo was head of the jury.

In 2017 she won the first place in Solo Vocal category of Made in NY Jazz Competition where Mike Stern, Randy Brecker and Lenny White were among the jury and took the stage at Gala night realized at Tribeca Performing Art Center.

Mon 30: Önder Focan & Şallıel Bros. “Funkbook” (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

We will listen to a new project by Önder Focan and Şallıel Brothers. Şallıel Brothers are the founders of What da Funk Project, in which they interpret classics from funk, jazz and soul music with their own arrangements. The saxophonist brothers will interpret Önder Focan’s compositions in their own funky style tonight

Tue 31: Önder Focan Trio & the Closure Jam (21:30-00:30)

Nardis completes the first season of its 16th year, taking a one month break. We will be opening our doors again on the 1st of September 2018, but tonight our musician friends will be joining us for a jam session.
