Electric Playground Istanbul: Nine Reasons to Check Out Marshmello

Marshmello has come a long way since first jumping into the music scene in 2015, by immediately turning heads as an anonymous producer with an unforgettable giant cartoon marshmallow mask, almost certainly inspired by (or in tribute to) other electronic juggernauts like Daft Punk and Deadmau5.

Fast-forward four years; Marshmello has quickly risen to the top with his fun and simple trap elements and signature stylings. Over the years he has grown from strength to strength playing big festivals including Lollapalooza and Bumbershoot, as well as a variety of EDM festivals, such as EDC Las Vegas, and Tomorrowland.

Now, he’s coming to Istanbul as part of the Electric Playground series, alongside the talents of Kungs on July 3rd at Küçükçiftlik park. We’ve put together a list of reasons why we LOVE Marshmello’s unique and eclectic sound and how this is a festival you won’t want to miss!

1. His remixes are always on point!
From Diplo to Skrillex, Marshmello is a well-known name when it comes to collaborating with the best. With his first commercial release being a remix of Jack Ü’s radio hit “Where Are Ü Now” featuring the world renowned Justin Bieber, Marshmello is becoming a household name of the EDM scene. Let’s be honest, you have to be pretty awesome to land a Jack Ü remix with just a few Soundcloud tracks under your belt, and he’s made good on his promise to keep the momentum going.

2. His music comes first.
The dynamic DJ has always pushed a mantra from the get-go of “just enjoy the music, don’t worry about me”. Fans indulge his on-stage persona and love him for it, but the ultimate focus is forever on the music, which is a certain ethos that I think we can all get behind. Fans who have attended his live shows seem to feel the same way, saying there’s no ego, just love.

3. He’s accomplished so much in just four years.
Like any great DJ, it was only a matter on time before the accolades started rolling in. Marshmello has received numerous awards, including the Dance Music Awards, Electronic Music Awards and WDM Radio Awards. Marshmello has also received the very prestigious ‘Best Use of Vocal award in Remix’ award, as well as the ‘Highest New Entry’ in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs.

He also made waves when streaming an interactive concert in the massively popular Fortnite multiplayer game that had over 10 million players take part and surely made a huge impact on the the face of interactive events in gaming forever.

4.Skrillex is a loyal fan (and we all love Skrillex)! Most of the hype around Marshemello first came from dub-step icon and world-famous DJ, Skrillex (who also played Küçükçiftlik a few years back). Marshmello was one of his weekly favorites in the popular ‘Skrillex Selects’ series, pushing Marshemllow to the top of the EDM DJ list, and giving him a lot of high profile support. In fact, the most popular theory behind Marshmello’s true identity is a result of an accidental name drop from Skrillex in an interview he once did in a 2017 interview.

5. He is here for the #MelloGang
Marshmello continues to make music for his fans and his fans alone. Despite his anonymity, Marshmello’s humility has led to an ever-growing fan base, also known as the #MelloGang, who love his positivity and great music! We come in all shapes and sizes, from young fans just getting into the EDM genre to veterans of the EDM scene.

6. We have no idea who he is and we love it!
Like any superhero, this masked producer’s identify remains unknown for those willing to play along. There have been numerous theories regarding Marshmello’s secret identity. Though some fans might have cracked the case, many fans feel that the name behind Marshmello doesn’t matter, only the music does. All we can be certain of is that there is a lot still to come from the American DJ and we can’t wait to see what he’s got hidden up those white sleeves.

7. His music videos and Youtube channel are amazing!
So if you can’t tell by now, his music videos are tons of fun! Always clever, always positive, and just super visually entertaining! Beyond that though, he also features gaming and cooking sessions on his channel. Rather than using words, he uses body language to get his point across, and even featured the lovely Paula Abdul for one of his cooking sessions.

8. Kungs is opening and they’re kungin’ awesome!
With hits like “This Girl”, “Don’t You Know”, and “I Feel So Bad”, the melodic electronic sounds of Kungs are some of the most accessible in the genre. The french DJ, producer, and musician is a young talent and also fresh to the scene, but equally making a major statement with his diverse sounds and impressive collaborations. We’re very much looking forward to him as well!

9. Electric Playground is earning their place as one of the city’s finest electronic festivals.
Electric Playground had a freshman debut featuring “The Chainsmokers”, “Lost Frequencies”, “Mahmut Orhan” and “DJ Funky ‘C’” last year, which is honestly the kind of introduction every festival aspires to. They’re building on that momentum in their second year, with an ambitious line-up and quickly establishing themselves as one of the city’s finest electronic festivals.
