Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and producer Bilal performs at Babylon on Friday 11 December. One of the defining voices of contemporary neo-soul, Bilal has built a career that moves fluidly between soul, jazz, funk, R&B and experimental music, earning a reputation for fearless artistic exploration and one of the most distinctive vocal styles of his generation. Emerging at the turn of the millennium with his acclaimed debut album 1st Born Second, Bilal became closely associated with the Soulquarians collective alongside artists including D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Common, Questlove and J Dilla. While rooted in classic soul traditions, his music has consistently embraced jazz improvisation, electronic production and avant-garde influences, resulting in landmark releases such as Airtight’s Revenge and In Another Life, the latter produced in collaboration with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
In 2024, Bilal entered a new chapter with two contrasting releases. Live at Glasshaus revisits songs from across his catalogue with a live ensemble featuring collaborators including Questlove, Common and Robert Glasper, highlighting the improvisational qualities that have long defined his performances. Released eight years after his previous studio album, Adjust Brightness expands his sound further, incorporating experimental textures while maintaining the emotional directness that characterises his songwriting.
Bilal’s concerts are known for their spontaneity, with jazz-informed improvisation and vocal freedom shaping each performance differently from the last. Blending technical virtuosity with an instinctive sense of expression, he continues to occupy a singular place within contemporary Black music, bridging tradition and experimentation without compromising either.
