(PAST EVENT) “An Empire Besieged: The Last Ottomans”: Lecture by Virginia H. Aksan

The Anglo Turkish Society, founded in 1953 with the aim of strengthening and developing the historical ties of friendship and understanding between the peoples of Britain and Turkey, will be hosting an online lecture on Thursday 10 February, “An Empire Besieged: The Last Ottomans”. Featuring speaker and Professor Emeritus Virginia H. Aksan, the event will take place on Zoom and starts at 21:00 (18:00 UK time), with booking available via Eventbrite.

From the organizer:

The Ottomans 1700-1923: An Empire Besieged charts the transformation of a once formidable Eurasian power into a colonial client of Britain, France, Germany and Russia. It traces the lives of friends and foes of the Ottomans who witnessed the rise and fall of a constitutional experiment in an era of shrinking borders, global consciousness, ethno-religious nationalism, and revolutionary fervour. Aksan’s talk will explore the transformation through the eyes of three military figures: Hüsrev Pasha, d. 1855; Ömer Pasha (d. 1871), and Mahmud Şevket Pasha (d. 1913).
