Vanishing Twin will perform at Salon İKSV on Saturday 27 September offering a richly textured journey through experimental pop, psychedelia, and global soundscapes. Led by the multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Cathy Lucas, the London-based trio has forged a compelling path with genre-blurring releases that balance cosmic grooves, rhythmic invention, and emotive depth. Formed in 2015, the group takes its name from Lucas’s twin who vanished before birth—a haunting, poetic origin that hints at the enigmatic quality of their music. Their debut album, Choose Your Own Adventure (2016), introduced their art-pop ethos infused with psychedelia. They followed with The Age of Immunology (2019), which brought Lucas’s vocal range into sharper focus, and Ookii Gekkou (2021), noted for its smooth, expansive production. Their latest album, Afternoon X (2023), builds on this trajectory with denser electronic textures, offering what critics have described as “an unusual balance of chaos and calm.”
Vanishing Twin’s sound draws from a wide palette—krautrock, post-punk, tropical rhythms, and psychedelic pop—woven together by the hypnotic interplay of drums and bass. Their stylings evoke comparisons to Stereolab while channeling Brazilian psych-jazz and avant-pop traditions. The members each bring impressive credentials: Lucas’s former role in Fanfarlo; drummer-percussionist Valentina Magaletti’s work with Bat for Lashes and Neon Neon; and Susumu ‘Zongamin’ Mukai’s flair for inventive bass and electronic textures.
Their performance promises to be a utopian voyage, lush with layered instrumentation, hypnotic grooves, and an expansive, immersive mode of songwriting. Vanishing Twin crafts music that feels at once cerebral and sensual, inviting listeners into shimmering, unpredictable worlds where rhythm and melody resonate in ways that both challenge and enthrall.
