Every Tuesday, Balfolk Istanbul meets and hosts a ball at The Mekan to practice Balfolk dances and enjoy the live music of Deli Reçel. Each session starts with a class at 20:00 to learn new dances or variations on existing ones. The classes run at 25 TL (20 TL for students) for a single session or a four-session package at 95 TL (75 TL for students). The balls then start at 21:00, with entry set at 10 TL (free for those who attend four classes). Note: There will be no session held on Tuesday 8 March in honor of International Women’s Day.
From the organizer:
Balfolk dancing is a form of popular social dancing from Europe, a recent revival of traditional dances. There are couple and group dances, in circle, in line… Some are very joyful and lively, like the Circassian circle and the Scottish, while others are smooth like the Waltz or sensual like the Mazurka. Most of the dances are easy to learn, this enables newcomers to participate quickly to the ball, while other dances require more time to master them.
The team: Esra Hızır and Anna Marquer-Passicot met in Turkey. Both of them learnt these dances in Slovenia and Portugal respectively and as they missed dancing, they decided to teach them in Istanbul.
Esra who studied sociology at Boğazici University is also learning lindy hop since one year. She is interested in psychology projects about children and dance/movement therapy.
Anna studied cultural management in France. After living in Portugal and Romania, she is living in Istanbul for around one year.
