(Sep 18) Snarky Puppy @ Volkswagen Arena

Snarky Puppy, the Brooklyn-based collective that has effectively redefined the parameters of modern fusion, brings their high-energy blend of jazz, funk, and rock to Volkswagen Arena on Friday 18 September, courtesy of Pozitif. Led by bassist and primary composer Michael League, the group has evolved from a college project into a global musical phenomenon, earning five Grammy Awards and a reputation for technical brilliance that never sacrifices the groove. Tickets are available via Passo.

The foundation of Snarky Puppy was laid at the University of North Texas, where League assembled a rotating cast of musicians who shared an interest in breaking down the barriers between genres. Their breakthrough came with the live-in-studio album We Like It Here, which showcased their ability to execute complex, interlocking arrangements while maintaining a deep, soulful pocket.

Over the years, their discography has expanded to include ambitious projects like Sylva, recorded with the Metropole Orkest, and the more recent Empire Central, which pays homage to the Texas funk and gospel scenes that shaped their early sound.

What distinguishes the group is their collective philosophy; despite the individual virtuosity of its members, the music always prioritizes the ensemble over the soloist. This approach has allowed them to incorporate a vast array of influences, from West African rhythms to electronic textures, without losing their core identity. Their influence extends beyond their own recordings through GroundUP Music, the label and festival founded by League that has become a vital hub for independent and experimental artists from around the world.

On stage, Snarky Puppy is a formidable force, often featuring over a dozen musicians who navigate intricate tempo shifts and sudden dynamic changes with intuitive ease. Their live sets are known for their unpredictability, as familiar tracks are often reimagined through extended improvisations and new instrumental layers. Friday 18 September offers a chance to witness a band that has successfully brought instrumental jazz-fusion back to the center of the cultural conversation, delivering a performance that is as intellectually engaging as it is physically resonant.
