Although initially formed in 2004, it was not until May 2010 that the formation of SOEN was announced. The band was founded by former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez and guitarist Kim Platbarzdis. Drawing inspiration from their diverse musical backgrounds, the duo set out to create a project that would blend intricate melodies, progressive structures, and emotionally charged lyrics that redefine the boundaries of the metal genre.
The group’s first song, “Fraccions”, was released on the band’s official website in October 2010. Their debut album Cognitive was released on 15 February 2012. While the band’s sound has evolved over the years, their core approach to combining complexity with accessibility remains a defining feature.
SOEN’s fourth album, titled ‘Lotus,’ embarks on a fresh journey through a distinct array of perspectives. Released on February 1st, 2019 under the label Silver Lining Music and under the production of David Castillo and Iñaki Marconi. ‘Lotus’ delves into examinations of contemporary society in tracks such as ‘Rival,’ ‘Covenant,’ and ‘Martyrs,’ which are rich with intricately woven themes of confusion and disorder, expressed poetically.
Influenced by a range of musical styles and artists, SOEN’s sound has been compared to bands like Tool, Opeth, and Katatonia. However, the band has cultivated a sound that is uniquely their own, marked by a constant drive to push musical boundaries.
The current members of SOEN are:
Joel Ekelöf – Vocals
Martin Lopez – Drums
Lars Enok Åhlund – Keyboards & Guitar
Cody Lee Ford – Guitar
Oleksii “Zlatoyar” Kobel – Bass
