(May 5) Papooz @ Blind

Papooz bring their elegantly worn-in strain of French pop-rock Tuesday 5 May to Blind, with support from %100 Müzik. Built on close harmonies, supple guitar lines, and a songwriter’s sense of economy, the duo sit in a tradition that treats melody as the main event while borrowing freely from soft rock, chanson, and 60s pop craft. Papooz began as a Paris project led by childhood friends Armand Penicaut and Ulysse Cottin, with a sensibility shaped as much by anglophone classic pop as by French songwriting. Their early breakthrough came with the album Green Juice, a record that introduced their signature blend of breezy arrangements and bittersweet undertow. Rather than leaning into indie-rock abrasion, they chose polish and clarity, writing songs that move with an unforced swing and leaving room for vocal interplay to carry the emotional shading.

As their catalogue expanded, Papooz sharpened their palette without losing warmth. Subsequent releases deepened the band’s interest in vintage studio texture and understated groove, drawing on the quiet drama of Laurel Canyon songwriting as much as the poise of European pop. They have always sounded like careful listeners, artists who understand how small shifts in rhythm guitar, backing vocals, or phrasing can change the temperature of a song.

That attention to nuance is part of why their records travel well across languages and scenes. On stage, Papooz tend to bring a fuller band sound that pushes the material into a more physical register. The songs remain melodic at their core, but they gain momentum through dynamics, extended codas, and the subtle elasticity of a group that knows when to sit back and when to lean in.
