Kompakt
Founded by Wolfgang Voigt, Jürgen Paape, Reinhard Voigt and Michael Mayer in 1993, Kompakt has celebrated its 20th year of existence in 2013, looking back at a past dominated by a discography of surprisingly large variety. From experimental house and early minimal techno to all kinds of dance music, much-acclaimed and highly distinct artists like The Field, Kölsch, Superpitcher, Matias Aguayo, Justus Köhncke, COMA, Gui Boratto, Kaito, Walls or Saschienne have shaped their careers via the iconic imprint, just to name a very few. The complete story behind Kompakt’s empire of widespread distribution, booking, publishing and management is surely much more complicated than that, but Wolfgang always says it best: “Forward ever, backwards never.”
Michael Mayer
As a DJ, producer and remixer, Michael Mayer remains one of Germany’s core celebrities in dance music. It’s no secret that he spends his weekends traveling around the globe. It’s likely throughout his career he’s played in front of millions. Then, as a co-owner of Kompakt, he spends his weekdays deciding what will be released on the label and working with the label’s artists and overseeing Kompakt’s distribution wing – the home of over 50 record labels. Amazingly enough, he manages to sneak into the studio on occasion to produce his own music and remix the likes of Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Foals and Rufus Wainwright. It’s safe to say he loves being challenged and regardless of the pressure is never putting less than 100% of his heart and soul into everything he does. In spring 2016 Mayer released his 3rd full-length album »&« on K7, a passionate and personal collection of tracks he produced cooperating with soulmates like Barnt, Prins Thomas, Hauschka, Joe Goddard, Miss Kittin, Kölsch or Roman Flügel. Shortly after he was set to contribute to the legendary DJ Kicks series, again for K7.
Tobias Thomas
Tobias Thomas, born April 1970 in the south of Germany, is a member of the inner circle of the Cologne based electronic label Kompakt since the early nineties. He is working as a professional DJ since 1990, as a producer he was involved in cooperations & projects like Forever Sweet (with Michael Mayer and Reinhard Voigt) or Thomas/Mayer (with Michael Mayer) and did remixes for Tocotronic, Wassermann, Blaze, Commercial Breakup, Peter Licht, Andreas Dorau, Stella, Phantom/Ghost and others alongside Superpitcher, Jörg Burger, Dettinger, Michael Mayer, Ada, Geiger and Reinhard Voigt. After working as a music journalist for german music magazine SPEX from 2000 – 2006, Tobias became part of the Cologne music festival c/o pop, where he worked as the program director until 2013. Since 2014 he is part of Kompakt as booking agent, project and artist manager. Between 1998 and 2014 he was hosting the famous »Total Confusion«-Clubnight in Cologne. As a DJ Tobias Thomas played in more than 30 countries and on 4 continents.
Weval
Weval, the Dutch duo that consists of Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte, is currently one of the most talked about groups in the electronic music scene. The Amsterdam-based duo, which harmonized various genres with electronic music and gained critical acclaim with their album released on the highly prestigious Kompakt label, the duo’s success lies in regularly using elements of jazz, hip-hop, krautrock, pop and funk in songs, organically combining them and creating a whole.
