June Performances @ Nardis Jazz Club

Fri 1: Elif & Paul Sanchez – The Latin Project (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Elif Sanchez’s journey began at home in Istanbul. She graduated Istanbul University State Conservatory as a classical oboist with the honorary ‘outstanding success award’. During her studies at the conservatory, she was accepted to Bahcesehir Jazz School as a vocalist with scholarships and was awarded a diploma. She was accepted to Berklee College of Music on a generous scholarship and graduated in 2017. She had the opportunity to perform with incredible musicians and groups such as David Liebman, Terence Blanchard, Antonio Serrano, Tigran Hamasyan, Aynur Dogan, Guinga, Nobuo Uematsu and Dream Theater. She received the prestigious Bill Pierce award and Mediterranean Music Institute Award. Elif had a European and South American tour with her projects in 2016 sponsored by Berklee. In 2017, She was the co-producer and arranger for the Mediterranean Music Concert produced by Javier Limon featuring Aynur Dogan.

Paul Sanchez EN Paul Sanchez, Trumpet player from Ecuador began his musical career studying at the National Conservatory and the Brass Band. Paul started to study at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito at the age of 14. This gave him the opportunity to play with jazz musicians such as; Brad Goode, Jeff Galindo, Elizabeth Dotson, Greg Badolato, Rick Peckham and Antonio Hart. He got a full scholarship in the University of North Texas, where he took lessons from masters such as; Rodney Booth, Mike Steinel and Lynn Seton. Paul won first place as melodic instrument in the “Emisarios Del Jazz” competition and played at the Kennedy Center in D.C. In March 2011, he obtained the Presidential Scholarship from the prestigious Berklee College of Music. He had the opportunity to share the stage with musicians like Antonio Sanchez, Terrance Blanchard, Paquito D’ rivera, Luis Enrique and Alejandro Sanz, who he later performed with at the Latin Grammys.

Sat 2: Istanbul Funk Unit (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Inspired by the world famous Nils Landgren Funk Unit, Istanbul Funk Unit was formed by Cenk Soyak (CEO of Alotech A Cloud Telco Company) in 2011 with the participation of three fellow musicians and friends; Yahya Dai (one of the best musicians in Turkey), Tunc Erkan (actually a diver who part time works for Dell) and Kerem Turhan (composer, vocalist and keyboard player who recently released his debut album and exercises Architecture in Turkmalls Group in his spare time). The group performs the funk arrangements of masters like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter and Bill Withers, as well as tunes from Turkish folk music.

Mon 4: Can Çankaya Trio (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Pianist Can Çankaya did his Master’s degree in 2007 in New York upon receiving a scholarship.He studied with legendary jazz pianists like Mulgrew Miller, James Weidman and Harold Mabern. He performed at ‘Manhattan Center’, ‘Joe’s Pub’, ‘National Arts Club’ and ’92Y’ in New York, Brooklyn Dumbo Art Festival and Central Park Summer Stage Festival. Being one of Turkey’s most important pianists, he was one of the four founding members of ‘Kangroove’. He played with bands like ‘Acid Trippin’, ‘Detant’, ‘Ricky Ford’s Istanbul Collective Big Band’, ‘Kangroove’, ‘Funkbones’ and ‘Ece Göksu Quintet’. He performed at ‘Istanbul International Jazz Festival’, ‘Rock’n Coke’, ‘Improvisation Festival’, International Electronica Music Festival’ with his own trio. He recorded an album in France in 1998 with the support of French Cultural Center. The trio will be performing originals and standards.

Tue 5: Batu Şallıel Quartet (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Batu Şallıel was born in Mersin. At the age of 9, he started his musical journey with the support of his father Mumin Salliel. In 2010, he attended the Turkish leg of London College of Music exam and was ranked as one of the top instrumentalists. He performed in the 13th Istanbul Jazz Festival with his brother Anil Salliel with their ‘2 Saxophones’ project. He was a part of Turkish pop singer Goksel’s band during 2009 and 2010, and played with Askin Arsunan’s JazzIno between 2010 and 2011. In 2012 he co-founded the project called ‘What Da Funk’ with Batu Salliel. In 2014, with the guidance of Onder Focan, he participated in the Riga Jazz Stage Saxophone Contest in Latvia. He was ranked first among the 10 saxophone players from various countries and was awarded the Grand Prize and Best Improvisation awards, also receiving invitations to per for at the Stockholm Fashing Jazz Club and Riga Jazz Saxophone Festival.

Wed 6: Ayşe Tütüncü Band (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

The band brings piano and electric guitar together. Their repertoire mainly includes Ayşe Tütüncü’s compositions but they also perform tunes by group members Sinan Altıparmak and Enver Muhamedi. They will also be performing music by Marcel Khalife and Michel Petrucianni.

Wed 7: 6 F – Holes & Some Skins (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Çağlayan Yıldız (1966) grew up in İzmir and after graduating from Ege University in 1990 he attended Bilkent University Jazz Department. Between 1992 and 2000 he was a performer and arranger in the İstanbul jazz and pop scene and was a part of many important projects. He lived in Amsterdam between 2000 and 2006 and wrote many tunes and gave many performances. During this time he also earned a master’s degree from the Utrecht Conservatory’s Composition and Electronic Music Departments. Upon returning to Turkey in 2006 he taught at the Bilgi University, made radio shows at TRT, wrote articles for three different magazines and also worked as a performer, composer and arranger. He is working on his doctorate’s degree on composition at ITU MIAM.

Fri 8: Anıl Şallıel & Friends (22:30-01:30) // 40 TL

Anıl Şallıel’s music journey started at the age of eight with the support of his father Mümin Şallıel. He started performing professionally at 14 and was a part of Orhan Osman’s ‘Turkophony’ project alongside Dave Weckl. He performed with bands and artists including Kavela, Effective Band, Onur Mete Band, Ercüment Vural Band, İstanbul Superband and Aşkın Arsunan Jazzino Band. He also performed and recorded with pop music artists like Göksel, Volkan Konak, Teoman, Yalın, Manga, Sıla and Mehmet Erdem. In 2010 after taking the entrance exam of London College of Music in Turkey he started studying and graduated with honours. In 2012 and 2013 with What da Funk Project he performed with world renowned vocalists Kellie Sae and Omar. He was also a guest musician in the Nicola Conte concert which was an event for the International Jazz Day. Anıl also performs for jingles and film scores both as a saxophone and a flute player.

Sat 9: Selen Beytekin Project (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Selen Baytekin who was born in 1987 started her classical piano studies at the age of eight as a provate pupil of Ergican Saydam. She joined the European Voices choir during her highschool studies and then went on to form her own A capella group. Selen’s path crossed Ilham Gencer at a tango evening in 2007 and with his encouragement, she started her own solo piano & singing programme at Q Jazz Bar. She then performed with  Aşkın Arsunan’s The Blue Print Project Band. Selen grauated as a civil engineer from Istanbul technical University in 2008 and then obtained a masters degree in Architecture from the same University. While pursuing her professional career, Selen who is passionate about music continues to perform the Jazz, Soul, Funk & R&B scenes.

Mon 11: Bahçeşehir Univ. Jazz Graduation Concert (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Bahcesehir University Jazz Programme has been training the jazz students in order to spread and endear jazz music to the large masses since January 2013, with a jazz certification that was  opened in BAUART. In September 2014, Bahcesehir University Jazz Academy Masters degree in jazz composition and performance was established in collaboration with sound engineering program and since then holding certification and master’s degree educations to train the young generation jazz students and be the lead in jazz education in Turkey. Starting from September 2017 Jazz Academy will be opened in BAU International Academy of Rome and BAU International Berlin with the participation of leading Italian and and German jazz musicians as educators. In the graduation concert, BAU Jazz School Certificate program students and BAU Jazz Academy Pre-Master’s students will have their performances.

Tue 12: Volkan Topakoğlu Band (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Double bass player Volkan Topakoğlu was born in İstanbul, Kadıköy in 1986. He was brought up in a family of musicians and this led him to have a music education at a very early age. He studied cello and piano at the İstanbul Anadolu Fine Arts High School and during these years he got interested in jazz. He went on to studying at the Yıldız Technical University’s Jazz Programme and had the chance to work with bass player Kamil Erdem. After graduation he took lessons from Jacek Niedziela and Bronek Suchanek in Poland. Along with many album recordings he also played on TV and radio shows and TRT Jazz Orchestra. Tonight the band will be performing both his originals and also standards.

Wed 13: Kerem Türkaydın Quintet (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Kerem Türkaydın started playing the guitar at the age of 13. In 1996 he started studying at the Music Department of Dokuz Eylül University and studied there for three years. In 1999 he won a full scholarship for the Music Department of İstanbul Bilgi University. He studied guitar, harmony and improvisation techniques with greats like Neşet Ruacan, Kamil Özler, Donovan Mixon, Ali Perret, Can Kozlu and İmer Demirer. He wrote the book ”Caz Gitar Metodu” (Jazz Guitar Method). Since his graduation in 2004 he’s been in many pop and jazz projects and he also works as a session guitarist, jingle writer and arranger. The band will be playing his originals and some standards.

Thu 14: Los Amigos De Herman feat. Gökçe Hilal (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Every geography has a natural rhythm which is peculiar to that place, an experience from life which people of that land get from life, culture, songs, dances, rhythms, musics, which come into existence from that experience. The world needs all kinds of perspectıves.

The thousands of years of wisdom and experience of American Indians, the polyphonic harmony of Europa and multi rhythm of the African Music, the paculiar, extraordinary and complicated rhythm of Latin American songs; keep reminding us the brotherhood of the people of the world, similar or common humane feelings and thougts in our differences,(praise for natural beauties, affection, love, longing, gallantry, critique, grief, complaining, thoughts about life, stories about social events) in the plainest and most comprehensible way.

Along with dance and love songs, the songs of suffer days, hopeful tomorrows, and peace, which are the other side of Latin America, will be played and sung. In the night where will be warmed up with rhythms like samba, salsa, rhumba, cha cha cha, milonga, habanera, bolero, waltz etc., and where the songs of many Latin American singers, like Consuelo Velazquez, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Osvaldo Farres, Alvaro Carrillo, Sergio Mendes, Miguel Matamoros, Maria Teresa Vera, Hugo Blanco, Rafael Hernandez, Manuel Jimenez Fernandez, Armando Manzanero, Violeta Parra,will also be performed and jammed.

Fri 15: Deniz Taşar Quintet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Deniz Taşar has won Nardis Young Jazz Vocal Competition, İstanbul Culture and Arts Foundation Young Jazz Competition and Akbank JAmZZ Competition “Best Interpretation Award” in 2013 and since then has been performing in prestigious jazz venues and festivals, collaborating with big names in her performances. She released her well received debut album “Uykuda Bir Bulut” in 2016. She has a bass-vocal duo project “Songs From A Breeze” with an album “Chapter One”, also released in 2016. Tonight the band will be performing a selection of neo soul and jazz songs as well as Taşar’s original compositions.  

Sat 16: Ece Göksu Quintet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Ece Göksu comes from a family of musicians and was born in Ankara. As a child she sang with the children’s choir of the Ankara State Opera and Ballet where she went on to study the piano. She participated in masterclasses run by Hüseyin Sermet and Ayşegül Sarıca. She started to get interested in Jazz at university. When her family moved to Istanbul in 2000 she transferred to the Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory from where she studied with Prof. Seher Tanrıyar before graduating. In 2007 while singing in various Istanbul venues and taking part in different festivals she won the Fulbright scholarship and then a scholarship from the William Paterson University which allowed her to follow a master’s programme in NJ/USA. Her masters thesis was based on Billie Holiday’s compositions and this was eventually published as a book by UMI-Proquest. Ece Goksu’s repertoire tonight will include her album Masal and Slow Hot Wind.

Mon 18: Modal Caz Quartet / Modal Jazz Quartet (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Modal Jazz Quartet aims to bring together the melodic and rhythmic elements of Turkish Classical and Turkish Folk Music with the songwriting and harmony of jazz. All the compositions and arrangements are done by Nail Yavuzoğlu, bass player of the project. Other members of the band are Şenova Ülker on trumpet, Önder Focan on guitar and Erdem Göymen on drums.

Tue 19: Pelin Güneş Band (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Virtuoso Önder Focan keeps creating new project with young musicians, and this is one of them. They will perform beloved standards. Band has a vocalist; Pelin Güneş. Pelin born on 1995 in Kazakhstan. She lives in Turkey for about 10 years. She’s studying Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at Bahçeşehir University.

Wed 20: SPIN (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

SPIN  was formed by Sıtkı Sırtanadolu and Selim Benba in 2005 and released their debut album ‘İLK’ in 2007. The band was still together until they took a brake to concentrate on other projects. Selim Benba now lives abroad, so this will be a reunion project and they will be performing both old and new tunes.

Thu 21: Flapper Swing (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Flapper Swing is a quintet following footsteps of famous french jazz artist Django Reinhardt and New Orleans’s expatriate Sidney Bechet. These five musicians were brought together by their passion for taunting acoustic sounds of gypsy swing . Flapper Swing’s music is a sweet blend of manouche guitars, wild soprano saxophone, sensitive silklike vocal, supported by deep woody hum of double bass. In their performances Flapper Swing is striving to bring the audience an atmosphere of roaring twenties and ballroom parties, the times when jazz was still fun.

Fri 22: Sibel Köse Quintet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Sibel Köse was born in Ankara where she attended the TED Ankara College followed by the Architecture Faculty of the METU graduating as an architect. Her early interest in jazz coincides with her university studies. She attended numerous seminars in Poland. Ms. Köse performs in concerts, radio and TV productions and local & international jazz festivals since 1987. She has been the winner of the International Jazz Vocalists Competition held in Zamosc, Poland. She performed alongside Dee Dee Bridgewater, Raul Midon and Stacey Kent at the “Nina Simone Tribute” concert. She has an album published in Poland. Tonight Ms. Köse and her band hope to give you an enjoyable evening with their fresh interpretation of standards.

Sat 23: Meltem Ege Band (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Meltem Ege was born is Syracuse, NY. She started her musical education with the piano at the age of seven. She returned to Turkey with her parents in 1991 and eventually graduated from the Bilkent University Music and Performing Arts Piano Division. She took up singing during her university studies and experimented with rock, funk, R&B, jazz and other styles. She particapated in “Dom Chemika” summer school in Poland in 2006. She took part in the Nardis Jazz Club Young Singers Competition in 2007 and won a place representing “Nardis” and “Turkey” at the 12th Finland “Lady Summertime” Jazz singing competition where she won the 1st prize as well as the “most popolar singer” title by popular vote. She then went on to win the 1st prize at the Lithuanian “Jazz Voices 2008” competition. In 2007 she won an acceptance to the Berklee College of Music, Jazz Vocal Performance department and then won Berklee’s talent scholarship. Meltem Ege completed the course in an extraordinary 3 year period during which she had the opportunity to study with many notable performers including Rhinannon, Joey Blake, Bob Stoldoff, Lisa Thorson, Steve. She also won many awards such as Voice Department Achievement Award, representing Berklee as Student Ambassador in Canada and Peer Advisor. One of her compositions won her the 2nd prize at the “Songs for Social Change” competition in 2009. She graduated from Berklee with top honours (Summa Cum Laude) in 2010. Feb. 2018 she got doctor degree diploma from USA Los Angeles California Institute of the Arts Performer-Composer.

Mon 25: Bebop Project (21:30-00:30) // 50 TL

Bebop came around during the late 40’s and is considered the beginning of modern jazz. The band will be performing tunes of Bebop giants Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Bud Powell, Thelenious Monk and also their originals. The band is Şenova Ülker on trumpet, Engin Recepoğulları on tenor saxophone, Önder Focan on guitar, Ozan Musluoğlu on bass and Ayhan Öztoplu on drums.

Tue 26: Alonisma meets Italian pianist Carlomaria Nartoni (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Pianist and Composer in constant reasearch through improvisation, Carlo Maria Nartoni originates from a classical music background, followed by jazz and ultimately by free improvisation.

Carlo has played in concerts in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, France and Great Britain. He has also played in prestigious theatres such as Strehler, Manzoni and Arcimboldi in Milan, Teatro Sociale in Como, and clubs, Blue Note in Milan, Casa del Jazz in Rome, B flat in Berlin plus many others.

In 2006 his career on the Italian jazz scene was interrupted for a few years due to a health issue.  After this difficult time he was drawn closer and closer to his search for interior and spiritual well being and improvisation became a fundamental key of expression and self awareness.  From then on he concentrated exclusively on his own projects as a solo artist or in collaboration with artists of the same musical and personal ‘elective affinitiy’.

Thu 28: Can Tutuğ Quartet (21:30-00:30) // 40 TL

Can Tutuğ studied vibraphone with Amy Salsgiver at Istanbul Technical University Dr. Erol Üçer Center for Advanced Studies in Music in 2013. With lessons from Tony Miceli, he focused on jazz harmony and improvisation. He performed with Trakya Academy Chamber Orchestra and also with the group he formed called “The Cold Vibes” at the “Jazz at the Parks” event by winning the International Istanbul Jazz Festival’s Young Jazz competition. He has been performing at the International Istanbul Jazz Festival’s events ever since. At 2017, he was accepted to a 3-month gamelan education programme by winning the Indonesian Art and Culture Scholarship Guidance Project. Same year at April 30th World Jazz Day, he organized a public concert tribute to Thelonious Monk’s 100th birthday and performed Thelonious Monk’s compositions. Can Tutuğ Quartet is formed of four musicians who create “their music” with the joy of performing jazz standards and diversifying it with their own compositions.

Fri 29: İpek Dinç Yüce Quintet (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

Ipek Dinç who is an undergraduate of İstanbul University, Faculty of Chemistry, started her musical career in 2005 when she met İlham Gencer. She was a finalist at the 2006 Nardis Young Jazz Singer of the Year Competition and participated in the İstanbul Jazz Festival Young Jazz Singer competition. She gave a concert in the Festival. Her success at 2009 Nardis Singing Competition took her to the Nomme Jazz Festival Competition in Estonia where she won the 3rd prize. She participated in numerous festivals. Dinç has been invited to attend the “Young jazz Voices” event in Latvia in 2009. Her repertoire for this night will consist of R&B as well as jazz standards.

Sat 30: Esra Kayıkçı Band (22:30-01:30) // 50 TL

She began studying music theory and guitar in 1999. She studied jazz vocal with Elif Çağlar, Randy Esen and Sibel Köse and attended workshops of important musicians such as Shelia Jordan and Mark Murphy. She reached to the semi-final in the competition named “Jamzz” which organized by Akbank in 2011. She took stage at Anadolu University 11. Amateur Jazz Musicians Festival in 2013. In 2016 &Bozgun Hatıra& her first/debut album consisting of her own compositions and lyrics written by herself together with Mehmet Karadağ, was published under the label of Kabak & Lin Records in which Ercüment Orkut undertook the arrangements and musical directorate.

In 2016, she took the stage as semi-finalist in one of the world’s most prestigious competitions, 50th Montreux Jazz Vocal Contest where Angelique Kidjo was head of the jury.

In 2017 she won the first place in Solo Vocal category of Made in NY Jazz Competition where Mike Stern, Randy Brecker and Lenny White were among the jury and took the stage at Gala night realized at Tribeca Performing Art Center.
