Sanatorium will host the exhibition entitled “Chance and Necessity” through Thursday 19 April to Sunday 20 May. The exhibition investigates variation and emergence phenomena within the context of the relationship between vitality and material via the works by Kerem Ozan Bayraktar and Sergen Şehitoğlu. The entrance is free.

Sanatorium will host the exhibition entitled “Chance and Necessity” named after Jacques Monod’s book with the same title, to be held between April 19 – May 20, 2018 and featuring works by Kerem Ozan Bayraktar and Sergen Şehitoğlu.
“Chance and Necessity” investigates variation and emergence phenomena within the context of the relationship between vitality and material.
In his work entitled ‘Some of the potentially uninhabitable planets’ in the exhibition, Kerem Ozan Bayraktar investigates the relationship of exoplanet illustrations encountered in the science media with the concept of the “habitable environment” in astronomy. While Bayraktar deals with this investigation in terms of being scientific, colonialism and imagination, the other artist in the exhibition, Sergen Şehitoğlu, tracks the Anthropocene on the morphological structure of our planet with his work entitled ‘Mojave Desert’.
The artists also present in the exhibition a collaborative animation work entitled ‘Dust Devils’ focusing on the different motions and qualities of little dust storms occurring in a desert.
Sergen Şehitoğlu
The artist, born in 1980 in Istanbul, studied in Saint-Joseph High School and graduated from Yıldız Technical University Mechanical Engineering Department. Şehitoğlu, who continues his MA education in Marmara University Fine Arts Faculty, Photography Department, had his first individual exhibition in İ.F.M. Leica Gallery. Later, his artworks have been exhibited by several galleries and fairs in Istanbul, Berlin, Brussel, Amsterdam, London, İzmir, Ankara, Bursa, Basel, Paris and Vienna. The artist is one of the founder members of GFİ – a photography iniative. After publishing his first photography book “0 dB” in 2013, he published his second one “Kill Memories” in 2016. Şehitoğlu works and lives in İstanbul.
Kerem Ozan Bayraktar
Kerem Ozan Bayraktar uses the possibilities of reproduction, copying, repetition and variation of digital media to investigate and visualize wide range of phenomena. He completed his MFA and Post-Master degree at Marmara University Fine Arts Institute Istanbul with two thesis project on Digital Image and Systems Theory. He had five solo show and his works have been shown in many publications, video screenings and group shows including “Colony” (2018, Abud Efendi Mansion), “Deep, Darkness and Splendor” (2017, Galerist), “aRb” (2017, Sanatorium), “Habitat” (2016, Istanbul Modern), “VIVO” (2015, Kasa) , “Hypologie” (2013, Sanatorium), “Please Do Not Disturb” (2013, Istanbul Modern), “Borders & Orbits” (Siemens Art, 2009) and “26th Contemporary Artists Exhibition” (2008, Aksanat). He is represented by PG Art from 2007 to 2015 and now continues to work independently in his studio in Istanbul.
