(Nov 6) Mix Festival by Modundayız @ Zorlu PSM

MIX Festival by Modundayız returns for its tenth edition on Friday 6 November at Zorlu PSM, bringing together electronic music, alternative pop, R&B, punk and contemporary interpretations of Anatolian musical traditions in a programme built around unexpected contrasts. Headliners Kelis, James Hype, Saint Etienne and Sleaford Mods represent markedly different strands of international music, from the influence of early-2000s R&B to high-energy house, sophisticated British indie pop and confrontational electronic punk. Alongside established international names, the festival features artists working across psychedelic music, experimental electronics and modern folk, continuing its focus on bringing distinct musical worlds into conversation. Tickets are available via Passo.

KELIS

Kelis arrives with a catalogue that has repeatedly crossed boundaries between R&B, hip-hop, pop and electronic music. Her breakthrough album, Kaleidoscope (1999), established her as an unconventional voice in contemporary R&B, while Tasty (2003), featuring the global hit “Milkshake”, brought her music to a wider audience. Rather than remain tied to one sound, she has continued to explore different directions, including the electronic and dance-oriented approach of Flesh Tone (2010).

SAINT ETIENNE

Formed in 1990, Saint Etienne developed a distinctive approach to British pop by combining electronic production, dance music and a fondness for the melodic language of classic pop. Albums such as Foxbase Alpha (1991) helped establish their place in the evolution of indie dance, while their work has continued to balance club influences with a more reflective, song-oriented sensibility.

SLEAFORD MODS

Sleaford Mods offer a sharper counterpoint. The Nottingham duo, built around Jason Williamson’s acerbic spoken delivery and Andrew Fearn’s stripped-back electronic beats, have used minimal arrangements to address class, austerity and everyday frustrations in contemporary Britain. Records including Divide and Exit (2014) and English Tapas (2017) cemented their reputation for combining punk’s confrontational spirit with electronic minimalism.

WHOMADEWHO

Danish trio WhoMadeWho bring a hybrid DJ set that draws on their long-standing intersection of electronic music, indie songwriting and jazz-inflected instrumentation. Formed in Copenhagen in 2003, the group initially developed a sound that moved between live-band experimentation and club culture, later becoming a fixture of the melodic house and progressive electronic scenes. Releases such as Dreams (2009) and Knee Deep (2011) helped establish their fluid approach to genre, while their extended live performances and collaborations with electronic artists have strengthened their connection to dance music.

The wider programme extends beyond these established names. Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek reinterpret Anatolian musical traditions through psychedelic arrangements, while Islandman draw on electronic production and regional influences to develop their own form of contemporary psychedelia. French trio Dov’è Liana bring together house and pop, and Dumbo Gets Mad explore the meeting point of psychedelia, funk and experimental production. Egosex work with electronic textures and Afro-diasporic rhythms, while Donna Mobile by Elif Çağlar foregrounds the voice within an electronic setting. Cihangir Eryıldız, Ari Alpert, Berdin Demir, Touchy Toy Collective and Koffein Club Radio further expand the programme across modular synthesis, audiovisual performance and club culture. Taken together, the tenth edition of MIX Festival offers a cross-section of contemporary music that favours stylistic range and discovery over allegiance to a single genre.
