Scottish cult favourites Arab Strap return with a new chapter of their long-running story on Friday 27 November at Zorlu PSM %100 Studio, presented by %100 Müzik. Emerging in the mid-1990s at the intersection of lo-fi indie rock, post-rock, and spoken-word confessionals, the duo built a reputation for transforming everyday anxieties, failed relationships, and late-night introspection into something both sharply observed and deeply affecting. Their recent resurgence has been one of the more compelling comeback narratives in contemporary alternative music, proving that their perspective remains as relevant as ever. Tickets are available via Passo.
Formed by Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton in 1995, Arab Strap quickly distinguished themselves from their peers through a combination of sparse instrumentation and Moffat’s candid lyrical style. Albums such as Philophobia, The Red Thread, and Monday at the Hug & Pint established the group as one of the defining voices of late-1990s Scottish independent music. Their songs often blurred the line between storytelling and confession, pairing dark humour with an unflinching examination of intimacy, loneliness, and modern life. Support from influential broadcaster John Peel helped introduce the duo to a wider audience, while their singular approach left a lasting mark on generations of songwriters that followed.
After disbanding in 2006, Arab Strap’s catalogue continued to grow in stature, making their eventual reunion all the more significant. The release of As Days Get Dark in 2021 marked their first studio album in more than fifteen years and was widely praised for expanding their sound without abandoning the emotional honesty that defined their earlier work. Rather than relying on nostalgia, the record presented a band willing to evolve, incorporating heavier textures, electronic elements, and a renewed sense of purpose.
That forward-looking approach continued with subsequent material, where driving rhythms and more adventurous production sit comfortably alongside the sharp observational writing that remains at the heart of the project. On stage, Arab Strap balance the intimacy of their early work with the broader sonic palette of their later releases, creating performances that feel both reflective and strikingly contemporary. For audiences interested in the enduring possibilities of alternative music, this appearance offers a chance to see a band still actively reshaping its own legacy.
