Founded in London in 1999, Akram Khan Society has a worldwide reputation as a community dedicated to telling contemporary stories with a strong and innovative approach. Adopting a unique style that brings together traditional Indian dance kathak and contemporary dance, Khan’s choreographies are defined as catchy and high-level creative works. With his interdisciplinary approach, Khan has worked with many artists from different fields, from Chinese National Ballet to Juliette Binoche, from Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui to Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormly and Kyle Minogue. In addition to Laurence Olivier, the most prestigious award in British theatre, he has been awarded many awards for his achievements over the years. Akram Khan was just ten years old when he played the role of Mowgli in The Jungle Book, which was adapted as an Indian dance performance in 1984. Thanks to British writer Rudyard Kipling’s unforgettable novel, when she fell in love with the stage, a lifelong passion was sparked. Based on her commitment to nature and her own roots, this time adapting the piece as a dance theater, Khan reinterprets The Jungle Book to deal with the climate crisis and presents Mowgli as a climate refugee girl. Focusing on the threat humanity poses to nature, Khan looks at our world devastated by climate change through the eyes of a child. As she reinvents Mowgli’s journey, she also encourages us all to take steps to create a better world together. With impressive scenes created with the latest visual technology, supported by the unique music of award-winning composer Jocelyn Pook, who has worked with important names such as Stanley Kubrick and Peter Gabriel, The Jungle Book offers the audience a truly mesmerizing experience from beginning to end.
