Electronica Fest Istanbul 2017

Some of this year’s must-see performers include:

Claptone – Perhaps the most formidable of this year’s performers, Claptone’s mysterious commitment to performing with a mask allows the music to speak for itself… and it certainly does. With collaborations ranging from Wu-Tang Clan to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, it’s hard to pin down a sound that unites this DJ’s broad-ranging talent. With a tour schedule that sees hundreds of performances a year, and an ongoing list of well-known performers seeking his collaboration, Claptone is in big demand and undoubtedly a real crowd pleaser.

Oliver Huntemann – With a firm pride in his roots of Hamburg, Germany, much of this DJ and producer’s roots are clear in the influences of his work. However, unlike many of his peers, Huntemann offers a raw and admittedly more minimal sound, with a clear grounding in techno. Having performed for over two decades, putting out numerous albums and remixes, as well as managed a successful label in Ideal Audio, he’s a veteran of the craft with no end in sight.

Andhim – The duo of Tobias and Simon hailing from Cologne bring a cheerful energy to every aspect of their approach to their self-proclaimed “super house” genre, ranging from their social media presence to much of their album art. Despite being relative newcomers when compared to the other international heavy-hitters on board this year’s festival, their rise to fame within the scene is testament to their quality.

Dominik Eulberg – In addition to packing venues as a DJ and working up the late night crowd, Eulberg happens to be a serious bird and fauna enthusiast… or rather, he’s a professional ornithologist. While the connection might not seem very noteworthy, a quick look at his online footprint, album art, song titles, and various samples, would make it very clear that they’re rooted in one another. A serious figure in the late-night scene, Dominik’s made quite the name for himself in both fields.

Red Axes – Tel-Aviv based DJ duo Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi, under their handle Red Axes, recently made their mark in Istanbul this past St. Patrick’s Day. Disco, house, and techno all converge throughout their live performances, reading the crowd vibes and responding accordingly to the mood. With an upward trajectory since their first electronic foray in 2010, they’re definitely worth a listen.

Oceanvs Orientalis – Very much the brainchild of founder Şafak Özkütle, their electronic sound is a mix of unique productions and remixes, with just the right levels of Eastern influence. Perhaps one of the biggest contenders in Turkey’s electronic music scene, they’ve also garnered quite a bit of of international recognition with acclaimed performances at Maya Hearts (Mexico), The Lab NYC (USA), and Burning Man (Nevada, USA).
