An urban bard of indie rock, Stephin Merritt is from New York, Lower East Side. He never lacks a pen in his hand, and a guitar on his lap. His effortless, cunning songs’ funny lyrics are usually balanced by emotional melodies. In his thirty-year career, Merritt has released many albums with The Magnetic Fields as well as the 6ths, the Gothic Archies and Future Bible Heroes. Quickies, the twelfth and final album of The Magnetic Fields (2020), is another product of Merritt’s mischievous mind. The album consists of 28 miniature songs, each ranging from 0:17 to 2:35 seconds. After this album that brings together small pieces that Merritt doodled in his spare time at night while recording 50 Song Memoir at the age of 50, the Magnetic Fields celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2022 with the vinyl edition of their first EP, The House of Tomorrow. They continue to tour the world with intimate and orchestral arrangements of their favourite songs. On their tour, where Salon is one of the stops, Stephin Merritt is accompanied by veteran Magnetic Fields members Sam Davol, Shirley Simms, Chris Ewen and Anthony Kaczynski.
