13 Things You Didn’t Know About Indie Rock Star Mac DeMarco

Salon İKSV’s one daylong festival Gezgin Salon, in which concerts are spread all over the city rather than taking place at only Salon İKSV, will be hosting indie rock star Mac DeMarco on 30 November at Volkswagen Arena. Mac DeMarco was found to be one of the most wanted names of “Peçeteye İstek”, a social media survey for Salon’s audience to decide who they would like to see perform in Salon during the season. Delivering on the results, he will be a part of Gezgin Salon under the sponsorship of Birlikte Güzel. But do you really know who Mac DeMarco is?

Who is he?
1. Mac DeMarco was born in 1990 in Canada.

2.He was part of various bands since he a was a kid. However, none had any ambition of having a music career. In 2008, he moved to Vancouver to start his music journey professionally.

3. Although he was a big fan of music since his childhood, he didn’t think of having a career in music until his teenage years. His approach to music changed when he started to play music in order to impress the girls in his school. That was when he realized he wanted to be a musician.

4. His grandmother was a popular opera singer, his grandfather was a saxophone player, while his mother and aunt were interested in music in their youth as well. The fact that he is coming from a family whose members are fully interested in music has clearly affected his thoughts about having a music career.

5. As a part of his garage-noise / punk rock project Makeout Videotape, he released his own album Heat Wave in 2009.

6. Two years after he started off his career, his audience numbers slowly increased from a few to hundreds and eventually to thousands.

What’s his production process like?
7. Instead of working with big names, DeMarco loves to collaborate with his friends in his songs and music videos.

8. Mac DeMarco insists on recording every part of his albums and playing all instruments by himself.

9. The way Mac DeMarco produces has changed throughout the years. For a long time, he had been writing the instrumental parts of the songs and adding the lyrics afterwards. After a while, he started writing the instrumental parts and the lyrics simultaneously. For example, Salad Days is one such song.

10. You might think that Mac DeMarco is just a musician. But you are wrong. He is interested in various branches of art. For example, he created lots of psychedelic music videos.

Who are his influences?
11. DeMarco says he’s not great at following today’s contemporary music, and generally listens to the music of video games like Final Fantasy and to The Beatles.

12. He calls Shuggie Otis, Black Sabbath, Jonathan Richman, Genesis, Sting and Weezer as his favorite musicians, whereas he also listens Japanese musician Haruomi Hosono whom he defines as his favorite artist.

13. Mac DeMarco of course has other inspirations as well. For him, John Maus, Arie Pink, Isao Tomita, and R. Stevie Moore are the artists that inspire him the most and he also finds their music creation style as the most similar to his style.

For those who would like to listen to the fascinating performance of this incredibly talented musician, come to Volkswagen Arena on 30 November in order to experience this incredible night!

Before Mac DeMarco, the stage will also welcome Büyük Ev Avlukada and Los Bitchos.
