From the survey:
This survey is part of an academic research project titled “Expat Kitchens in Istanbul: Reading Local and Global Identities Through Foodways”. The research is conducted by Dr. Billur Dokur at Kadir Has University, Gender and Women’s Studies Research Centre, supervised by Dr. Didem Kilickiran and sponsored by TUBITAK. This research will cover a period of two years (February 2014/February 2016). This survey will be online until April 1 2014.
My interest to conduct this research comes from my personal background. I was born in Istanbul, and lived in the city until my early 20’s. Since my childhood I loved traveling. After graduating from the university I moved to the UK and lived in London as an expat woman. I traveled as much as I can, I met with great people and I worked at odd jobs. During that time food has become a great interest of mine, both to build and express my own identity and to understand other cultural identities. Follow my passion I did a PhD at The Open University, Geography with a focus on geographies of food. More or less after ten years I moved back to Istanbul a year ago. And I started to re-learn and re-experience the city in which I was born.
My current research, broadly, aims to explore how the relationship between food, home and identity is performed in expat kitchens in Istanbul and how such performances contribute in the making of culinary culture and foodways of Istanbul.
