In short: This review is written by a person who, before going to the GusGus concert last Thursday at Babylon Bomonti, knew only two of their songs. Yes, two. Fun fact: At the end of the night, she became a GusGus addict and her Spotify keeps replaying GusGus songs again and again, up until this very moment. So do you think the concert was good? The answer is hell yes!
The evening started with Başak Günak performing under the name Ah! Kosmos. She warmed up everybody with some fresh electro sounds and kindled their desire to dance all night long. By 10:00 pm, everybody seemed not only to enjoy the vibes but were even hungry for more! Thankfully it was time for GusGus to take the stage.
At that time the entire hall was fully packed with stylish young urbanistas holding their Bomonti beers in their hands, with the lyrics of their favorite GusGus songs on the tip of their tongues. The first to come on stage was Birgir Þórarinsson, delighting our ears and eyes with some decent electro sounds and his French lace outfit. Then Daniel Ágúst Haraldsson and his crazy dance moves showed up, making everybody dance like crazy. This was followed by the appearance of Högni Egilsson and his iconic Viking-style long white hair and beard.
These three guys were so different and so unique that at the beginning I was a little surprised that they were actually able to unite and create something so extraordinary. But at the end it made me realize, being different is what makes this group unforgettable. And everybody seemed to agree with me by dancing like crazy, singing out loud together, jumping and screaming. The vibe created was so good that I will always buy a ticket whenever GusGus is in town.
The big night finished around 1:30 am with everyone smoking their last cigarettes outside of the Babylon Bomonti, discussing current matters (like their sore feet from too much of dancing), joking with their friends who drunk too much and eventually getting their taxis home or to the nearest fast food restaurants. If they chose the latter, I imagine they were planning to eat away the sadness that accompanied the ending of such a spectacular show, which was one of the finest in months!
