SALT Galata will host “Apprehending and Appreciating Yaşar Kemal / Portrait of a Novelist as a Journalist” from Wednesday 8 February through Sunday 19 March.

Yaşar Kemal (1923-2015) was a pioneer of modern reportage in Turkey. With an exceptional incorporation of investigatory journalism and literary prowess, Kemal’s newspaper reportages told of the tough living conditions of people from remote corners of Anatolia, and communicated the voice of those who were ignored or not heard. Sharing long stretches of time with his subjects and encountering their struggles firsthand, his observations were supported with focused research. He was always a relentless advocate for human rights, social justice, peace and freedom of expression during his entire journalism practice which began in the early 1950s at the national daily newspaper Cumhuriyet.
Organized by Yapı Kredi Kültür Sanat Yayıncılık in collaboration with SALT, Apprehending and Appreciating Yaşar Kemal / Portrait of a Novelist as a Journalist with written and visual archive materials stands witness to the human-centered approach that Kemal introduced to journalism culture in the 1950s and 1960s in Turkey.
Various newspaper texts —from his very first reportage in Diyarbakır to some of his press statements on social issues— are accompanied by original photographs, clippings and documentary footage. This content, selected from Yaşar Kemal Foundation Archive not yet available to the public, also interprets more than 50 years of the history of press as well as social and political events that took place in the country during those years.
Curated by Sadık Karamustafa and Sevengül Sönmez, Portrait of a Novelist as a Journalist is the first of three exhibitions developed by Yapı Kredi Kültür Sanat Yayıncılık, under the main title of Apprehending and Appreciating Yaşar Kemal.
